Baruch Dayan Emes: Rosh Yeshivas Itri ztz’l
With great pain the news was received of the petira of the Gaon Rabbi Mordechai Elefant ztz’l, who passed away at the age of 79. The levayah will be at 1:00 PM Sunday afternoon.
Thousands of students and graduates of Yehsivas Itri received the painful news of the petira of Hagaon Rabbi Mordechai Elefant ztz’l, who founded Yeshivas Itri and was the well known Rosh Yeshivah, after 79 years of life. For decades he taught Torah in Yeshivas Itri in various capacities.
HaGaon Rabbi Mordechai Elefant ztz’l was born in the USA. He was very close to Maran HaGriz (HaGaon Rabbi Yitzchak Zeev Soloveichik ztz’l), the Brisker rav, and for many years he was also close to Maran HaGaon Rabbi Elazar Man Shach ztz’l. After his marriage he settled in Eretz Yisrael, and founded Yeshivas Itri over forty years ago.
In Yeshivas Itri he shared the responsibilities of Rosh Yeshivah with harabbanim hagaonim Rabbi Shlomo Fisher and Rabbi Yitzchak Bratler. For a certain period the Gaon HaGadol Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach was asked to serve as one of the roshei yeshivah as well.
HaGaon Rabbi Mordechai Elefant ztz’l was known for his close friendship with leading statesmen and government leaders in many countries worldwide. He performed various assignments for some of them and the profits from these missions went to the Yeshivah’s coffers. He was to procure a huge allotment from the US Congress for the State of Israel, and in exchange received a certain percentage for the Yeshivah’s budget.
HaGaon Rabbi Mordechai Elefant ztz’l did not merit to have children, but he left behind thousands of talmidim, who owe him their success in Torah study and their development of Yiras Shamayim.
The levayah will leave at 1:00 PM from Yeshivas Itri in the Beit Tzafafa neighborhood in Jerusalem.
The Mission Continues As in the past so it remains today - we were and still are under the selfsame commitment to adhere to the directions of the Gedolei Yisrael, who stand guard against breaches of purity threatening our camp. When we were required to ask – we asked. When we were instructed to depart – we left. The moment we are summoned back to raise the flag, every other consideration is pushed to the side and we answer: We are ready!
