Concepts for the Upgrade of Leopard 2 Main Battle Tank
Leopard 2 A4 Evolution von IBD Deisenroth
Dieses Konzept konzentriert sich auf die Verbesserung des Rundumschutzes. IBD hat mit seiner Advanced Modular Armour Protection-Technogie (AMAP) ein Konzept für einen Leopard 2A4 entwickelt und realisiert, das synergistisch den Basisschutz durch den Zusatzschutz ergänzt. Nach Wegnahme der schweren Kettenschürzen ergibt sich ein Ausgangsgewicht von ca. 55 Tonnen; das Gewicht des nachgerüsteten Fahrzeugs mit dem Arbeitsbegriff Leopard 2A4 Evolution, beträgt ca. 60 Tonnen. Außer dem Anbringen der Befestigungselemente erfolgt kein Eingriff in das Fahrzeug. Die Zusatzelemente sind, wo erforderlich, schwenkbar angebracht, um den Zugang zu Wartungsöffnungen oder zum Tankstutzen zu ermöglichen. Das Schutzpaket ist modular aufgebaut und umfasst folgende Bausteine:

IED-Seiten-Schutz an Turm und Wanne:
- Dachschutz gegen Artillerie-Bomblets
- Minenschutz an der Fahrzeugunterseite und im Innenraum
Ein weiterer Schutzaufwuchs wird in einem zweiten Entwicklungsschritt die Ausrüstung des Fahrzeugs mit AMAP-Active Detente System (ADS) erreicht. Mit diesem abstandsaktiven Schutzsystem wird dann ein 360°-Schutz gegen schwere Flugkörper realisiert; bei Beschuss mit KE-Munition kann ADS die Bedrohung stören/zerstören, die passive Schutzauslegung nimmt die verbleibende kinetische Energie auf.
Der schwedische Strv 122 B
Die schwedische Variante des Leopard 2, der Stridsvagn, Strv 122 war sowieso schon einer der bestgeschützten Kampfpanzer. Mit der Version MBT 122 B wurden Schutzmodule des IBD Evolution integriert und so der in asymmetrischen Szenarien erforderliche nahezu 360°-Schutz gegen Panzerfäuste, IED, EFP und Minen realisiert.
MBT Revolution von Rheinmetall
Unter der Bezeichnung MBT Revolution hat Rheinmetall für den Leopard 2 eine modulare Kampfwertsteigerungslösung entwickelt, die insbesondere der Rundumbedrohung in MOUT-Szenarien gerecht wird und die Wirkmöglichkeit der Hauptwaffe noch verbessert.
Schutzkonzept
Das passive Schutzkonzept entspricht weitgehend dem des im vorigen Kapitel beschriebenen Leopard 2A4 Evolution.

This concept concentrates on the improvement of the all-around protection. With its Advanced Modular Armour Protection Technology (AMAP) IBD developed and realized a concept synergistically amending the basic protection by this additional protection kit. After removal of the heavy track skirts the initial weight of the vehicle is 55 tons. The completely upgraded vehicle called Leopard 2 A4 Evolution has a weight of about 60 tons. Except for the installation of mounting elements no other modification on the vehicle is necessary. Protection modules can be swung out allowing access to tank inlet or other openings for maintenance. The protection kit is modular and consists of:
- IED side protection on turret and chassis:
- Roof protection against artillery bomblets
- Mine protection under belly and inside the crew compartment
In a second development step a further upgrade of the protection is achieved with the application of the AMAP-ADS Active Defense System. This active defense system will provide a 360°-protection against heavy anti-tank guided missiles; ADS can destroy/disturb KE-threats, the passive protection modules absorb the remaining kinetic energy.
The Swedish Strv 122 B
The Swedish variant of the Leopard 2, the Stridsvagn STRV 122 was one of the best protected main battle tanks anyhow. However with the integration of protection modules of the IBD Evolution in the MBT 122 B an almost 360°-protection, required in asymmetric scenarios, is achieved against handheld anti-tank weapons, IEDs, EFPs and mines.
MBT Revolution Rheinmetall
Rheinmetall developed a modular solution for the upgrade of the Leopard 2 called MBT Revolution. This upgrade solution is specifically dealing with the spherical threat scenario in MOUT- environments and a further improvement of the efficiency of the main weapon.
Protection Concept
The passive protection concept is almost the same as that of the Leopard 2 A4 Evolution described above.
