What are the best games you’ve ever experienced? Smoking
   October 10th, 2011 clock image 12:45 pm

DM4

I’ve been contacted by Becky Selby who is currently studying at Truro College in Cornwall and has been given the task of designing a new game. Becky has asked for your help by telling her what are the best games you’ve ever experienced and why?

There are no rules around this, just leave a comment below with your favourite game experiences and if you can elaborate then great and if not hey you’re still helping out.

I’ll start by saying one of my favourite game experiences was playing deathmatch in Quake 1 on DM4 and being able to dominate the entire map purely by the sounds the opponents were making.

I could hear exactly where everyone was by the sequence of sounds and as such could then constantly be prepared for them, the amount of times I had people run directly into my rockets followed by screams of hacks was a truly awesome experience.

So what made that game for me was not only the fluid movement and freedom but also it was the first time I’ve experienced audio cues to that level in a game.

So, what’s your fondest or oddest gaming memory?

definitely for me one of my favorite memories is alot of what was in half life 2…physics (the gravity gun, and swinging those containers at combine from a crane had me grinning very evilly) character interaction and swinging a crowbar at those headcrabs, then the Mass Effect series purely for the scale it gives you to explore and again its character interaction. say what you will but left 4 dead’s co op is one of the best multiplayer experiences IMO, that is out on there right now you need to know what eveyone is doing and be on the ball constantly also swinging a chainsaw at 1000+ zombies doesn’t hurt either. taking turns to wipe each other out in vs mode is the most fun you can have at a lan barring a game of warlocks on warcraft 3

  • Andrey

Shun me for it as much as you want, but Resident Evil 5 co-op was the bomb

  • Poko

    Dungeon Keeper 1 in dos…..

In Alan Wake my back against the wall with a failing torch and being surrounded by the Taken and then coming across a flare gun which I use to shoot the one in the middle taking him out and allowing the rest to be taken out with bullets to their heads.

    So escaping the seemingly inescapable.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic (the first one). I played it all day and all night until I finished it. I’ll never forget that shocking plot twist; the great characters, voice acting and music, the story choices that actually affected the outcome. I don’t think any other game before or since has had quite as much impression on me.

  • http://twitter.com/MrSmithMachine Warren Smith

Sorry, but for this, I’ve gotta go this old school on you… My most memorable game was Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine.
It was the first game that I would rush home to play. It was the first game that made me tear my hair out in despair and slam my keyboard against my head. It was the first game I ever had to use a walk-through for… It was the first game that prompted me join a forum to find like-minded jibbering idjits who couldn’t figure out how to free Sophia from her cage!
And it was the first game, that after I was finally finished, left me feeling empty and at a loss for what to do next.

Getting killed by those weird but cute tiny sheep monsters in FFIX.

“Wait.. did that thing just crit me 9999?”

  • Warren

one of my memorable moments was gears of war 1…the first time you meet those grunts. your vehicle just broke down. its raining..and you hear distant screams. me  and a mate of mine were playing and we both just looked at each other and went…..!@#$!@#$!@#

Max Payne 1, Full Throttle, Fahrenheit … the most memorable games in my gaming history

  • Unholymunk666

errr…. I can give a few…. Heart of China (had amazing graphics and awesome story too)

Warcraft (all of them) amazing story and awesome gameplay!

Half-Life – Awesome story, awesome game, well executed!

    Fable 1 - awesome story, awesome gameplay…

I think you’re getting the picture…. good story, good gameplay. Graphics are second rate to any game with a good story and good gameplay ;)

  • Zion

For me it was Morrowind… I have not found another game that gave the versatility that Morrowind gave. I know the graphics is not good standard now days, but the gameplay makes up for that. Being able to play a game for hours on end without needing to finish it was one of the best experiences… Another game I loved was Dragon Age. I enjoyed the game play just as much, the only problem was that when you missed something on a area, you were not always able to go back and collect it. I had to play it 3 times to gather everything I Missed the first go.

    All hail Revan!

Amazing to think that I almost skipped Kotor, because at the time the Star Wars movies were stinking up the cinemas, and I had gone from a childhood Star Wars fan to absolutely despising the franchise.  Kotor was the shining light that redeemed Star Wars for me.

    Ah Bioware… what the f*ck happened? :(

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and Bioshock.

  • Venom215

RPG (Role Playing Game) – Baldur’s Gate hands down

RTS (Real Time Strategy) – Starcraft + Starcraft Brood Wars (BLIZZARD Games in general as            the  storyline is always amazing)

Hack and Slash – Diablo, Diablo II and Diablo LOD

Turn-based Strategy – Heroes of Might and Magic and UFO

and defs have to put Might and Magic in there even thou graphics always sucky. The game play and storyline was some of the best i’ve ever had in any game

  • Zion

I would agree with you. I enjoyed it just as much.. but no 2 made a bigger impression on me because it changed a lot of the interactions between you and team members meaning you could eventually train them as Jedi.. And I enjoyed the Plot more. :)

Old School: I would say it is a toss-up between the Sierra Hero’s Quest series and the Space Quest Series. Loved them all.

Too bad Hero’s Quest wasn’t re-issued  when they made the Police Quest, Space Quest, Larry and Kings Quest titles available again a while back.

Newer: I would say Oblivion and KotOR. Can’t wait for 11.11.11

Probably Amnesia. It wasn’t all Action. It required strategy to survive, and the atmosphere, inclusive of audio and visuals, was very tense and immersive. Truly, a horror game. Oh, and you can’t fight back.

Half Life 1 – what better way to start a game than with a Tram Ride. Not being sarcastic, honestly believe that game was the best game ever made.

The whole Space Quest series. Not only were the games exciting, funny and challenging, but they were also games I could play with my Dad when I was a kid and we would both struggle over the puzzles. Time-travelling in SQ4 is one of the most memorable gaming experiences of my life.

Quake1 and owning all the ppl that thought they could out aim someone with a mouse and keyboard, on a keyboard alone. many laughs were had in the computer science room in school (old school at its best)

  • http://www.hughlashbrooke.com Hugh Lashbrooke

For more modern games I would echo what people have said about KotOR – aside from great gameplay, the story was absolutely brilliant with an epic twist that I totally didn’t see coming.

  • Andrewz3

I really enjoyed KOTOR, command and conquor, Space quests, Heroes Quests, Phantasagoria, Jones in the fast lane, Ports of call.

  • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir James Lenoir

Kotor 2 paled in comparison to Kotor 1. It was definitely weaker in terms of story and THAT ENDING  AAARRGH!!. I might have raged when I finished Kotor 2. Not the worst game I’ve ever played but it definitely tarnished KOTOR for me.

  • BlackHawk

KotOR 1 definitely, and Jedi Knight 2!  Light saber combat ruled!
Morrowind for its deep deep story.
Jade Empire also had a pretty shocking twist, for me at least.
Need for Speed 1 – looooved my Viper!!!
StarCraft 1 – chess in space, ya!

Ah yes, ole DM4 on Q1, good times.

Some games (If I had to list them all we could be here a while) that have really made an impression on me are:

    Star Control 2
The Single player story was epic. Multiplayer was huge amount of fun. Such rich alien races and ships. The music and sounds were amazing for the time.

    The Baulders gate series
The story and the characters were awesome. The campaign seemed to last forever too. Go for the eyes Boo! Raaagh!

    The Homeworld series
One of my favourite series of all time. Lasers in space, epic fleet battles, that 3rd axis that you now have to deal with. And the interface just made it so easy.

The Half Life seriesThe one thing that sticks with me from Half Life 1 is the AI. I can still remember the marines rappelling down into the room, throwing grenades when I was behind cover and the radio chatter (“Go Recon!”). Man that was cool.

  • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir James Lenoir

You better have Sims on your computer, buddy because I’m not buying this generic hardcore gamer (I live in a basement with my broadsword) act.  That’s a list you use when you’re trying to impress fellow gamers on a wannabe SERIOUS site or during a pretentious LAN event, where they’ll give you the evil eye for enjoying something superfluous like Plants vs Zombies.

  • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir James Lenoir

No one has mentioned Demon Souls? You bunch of old women, now that’s a game that’ll put hair on your chest.

  • Oldfart

A good game is one that leaves you speechless for a few hours after completing it. Not many games do this but MG Snake Eater was stuck in my head a full 2 days after.

  • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir James Lenoir

You can always spot the mature gamers. They’re the ones that say things like “more modern/recent games” like Kotor, regardless of the fact that it was released almost 10 years ago. In gaming terms, that’s like the 19th century for modern gamers.

Don’t worry man, I do the same thing. lol.

  • Izpapalotl

No one for God of War!?
Ending sucked, but the weapons, flow of events, graphics???
Demon’s souls!? Brutal but oh so challenging!

  • Oldfart

Probably from all the confusion of Kojimas crazy story telling.

The opening sequence of Mass Effect 2.

I loved ME1, and was so stoked to get ME 2 when it came out. Love the fact that you can port over all the decisions you made in the first one. Anyway, I start the game and I am immediately loving the new visuals. Then the Normandy gets attacked and eveything goes to hell for Shepards team.

Shep saving Joker, then being sucks into space while dying…..then it also goes quiet except for the hauting music on the piano.

I just remember seeing that for the first time and all I could say was  ”wow……..”

Brilliant. Still the best game I have ever played.

  • http://www.hughlashbrooke.com Hugh Lashbrooke

10 years ago? Seriously? I feel like I first played it just the other day. Crap…time is going by too damn fast.

  • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir James Lenoir

Oh man Homeworld… now that’s an awesome game series. I completely forgot about it.

  • Mix09 R

Favourite Rpg – Nox from Westwood – fond childhood memories. :)
The Heroes of Might and Magic series has always been epic, otherwise the usual suspects: Half Life, Diablo2, Starcraft Brood Wars and Dungeon Keeper.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JI422YSUYHEEX2FJPHJZPXX5IQ Syth Za

The Baldur’s Gate series without a doubt. Great storyline, memorable characters, the best RPG mechanics of any RPG to date (it is D&D afterall). The fact that the storyline continued through the whole series made it my favourite game(s) of all time.

I still think back fondly of Aerie…

  • http://www.hughlashbrooke.com Hugh Lashbrooke

Jones in the Fast Lane! Yes! I didn’t even realise other people actually knew about that game. After playing stacks of Jones, a friend and I conceptualised a game we called ‘Life’ that was basically Jones in a 3D environment. A few years later The Sims was released and we were convinced they stole our idea.

Football manager on the ZX Spectrum! I spent DAYS on this, not DARING to switch it off because I was not able to save the game to a cassette tape!
Dungeon Keeper 1, Elite frontier and the ORIGINAL Pirates!

I was waiting for StarCon 2 to pop up. Genre defying, so much exploration, depth and and…SUPER MELEE!!!!!! That, Red Alert 1, Blade Runner and Jazz Jackrabbit 1 were my introductions to PC gaming. More recently, I must say RE4, it just kept surprising me, I finish the game and bam, three mini games and a hardcore mode unlocked. Leon, Help!!!!!!!

    Resident Evil 4

I would also go for Quake death match nothing compared to the sheer speed of the game by reading a players movements by sounds only. Quake 3 is a close second for the same reasons although it was much slower than Quake.

Half Life was using the quake engine when it came out and modern warfare was using the quake 3 engine up untill MW2.

My favourite map is DM6 on Quake 1

God of War was AWESOME! It was the reason I started playing consoles!

  • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir James Lenoir

Yeah, it’s almost 10 years old (8 to be exact), but on the other hand, it’s best not to dwell on these issues, because it’s already a shock to realise that the first Matrix movie is well over 10 years old.

The WTF moment in Bioshock… Would you Kindly agree?

Finally finding that damn Princess in Super Mario Bros is probably the earliest and best memory ever!

I also LOVED Leasure Suit Larry 7. That game had some awesome dry humour and those”duh” moments was brilliant!

Recently I have to go with the God of War. Finishing the first one on God Mode was insane. I destroyed the controller with all the mad button bashing.

My favourite series by far is Assassin’s Creed. THe first one was not so great, but after that the gameplay keeps improving and the plot is like a koeksister. Looking forward to Revelations.

Im gonna go cheesy here and say Metal Gear Solid 1, my reason would be that the gameplay took the traditional controller and memory card and manipulated them in game.

It turned our own memory cards and controllers against us in boss battles etc,  I have yet to experience that level of ingenuity again. Learning that we had to change controller ports and remove memory cards to beat a boss was mind blowing.

7th Guest/11th Hour/Myst series – These thinking games, that truly dig at your intellect and ability to problem solve are without a doubt some of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had.  From experiencing, and exploring the multiple worlds of Myst and unraveling the mysteries of what happened there, to the frustrating task of combating a psychotic house that laughs at you constantly every time you fail a puzzle in 11th Hour.  It’s a genre that sorely needs to be revisited.

Stalker: Shadows of Chernobyl/Clear Skies/Call of Pripyat:  These FPS’ defined difficulty, and engine complexity.  When you program AI that you have to dial down, because the NPC’s will actually beat the game faster than the player, you know something’s up.  The open world environment that interacts with each other provides some of the craziest gaming moments I’ve ever witnessed.  Case in point, you visit a ‘town’ where a faction of Stalkers, or Military have setup a camp, you get a quest from them and go off and do your thing.  Sometime later, you ‘fail’ the quest…with no idea why.  You end up backtracking to the camp where you got the quest from, to find a horde of ravenous rats, or mutated dogs have wiped out humans and currently reside there.  Yep, there’s no finishing that quest.  Additionally, with 7 different endings, the amount of variety you have in what you can do, adds to an amazing amount of replayability.  And trying to farm the anomalies for artifacts endlessly, while trying to survive also added to this.  Never before has a quicksave feature been so important, you forget that one and you could REALLY be hurting.

Call of Duty 1/United Offensive:  The dev tools available for this game made a very, very strong and tight-knit community surrounding this franchise (which is why it won GoTY).  When the guys over at After-Hourz, started designing Barbarosa, they went above and beyond simple ‘mods’, they designed and created tanks , APC’s, howitzers and other motorized vehicles that were not in the original game (using 3DS Max), but added to the overall character of the map itself.  When we were playtesting it in Base Assault mode one of the first times they’d ever opened it up to the AH community, there were clipping issues and bugs all over that made for a hilarious 32 v 32 evening (All on Teamspeak, captains chose teams etc..).  During one such encounter, I was trying to run into the basement of a base to arm the explosives, and ended up ‘floating’ over the entrance, because they hadn’t mapped the staircase correctly.  It was pretty funny, especially since moments later I was plastered with tank fire.  The point being, dev tools allow for some great experiences for gaming communities that pop up around your title.  Allow them to explore the possibilities of those tools, and you’ll be richly rewarded with a fan-base that helps keep your IP running for years to come.

Tomb Raider 1: Being able to swan dive off an extremely high platform, and smash head first into the ground with a sickening ‘crunch’, I remember being sick at a friends house and we were playing it and just couldn’t stop laughing every time we ‘accidently’ dove off an object that wasn’t around water.

Diablo 1-2:  Great story, told in a very entertaining way, tons of gear options, limited only to the users attention span.  Items that you quite possibly may never be able to put together or gather all the necessary ingredients for.  I personally enjoy the randomness/endless variety involved in games like this.  Sure, most of the drop gear is fairly standard, but the set pieces, and the ‘rune’ mechanic added another layer to it that kept you coming back for more.  Borderlands does this too, however, in Borderlands it ends up being just a gear grind, which can become boring over time.  Diablo just had you coming back for more.

Super Mario World:  Massive amounts of levels, with an insane amount of thought and creativity poured into them, as with most Super Mario’s you can choose to conquer every single level, or, speed run straight to the end in less than a half hour.  Great concept that never get sold.

Crysis 1/Warhead: Killing someone with a chicken never gets old.

World of Warcraft: Any game that has bosses/creatures that will laugh in your face if you try to beat them solo, is intriguing to say the least.  That one facet, was what drew me into WoW and kept me coming back…for quite some time.  I’ve graduated to ‘recovering WoW addict’ now, so I can look back on the fond moments without getting bent out of shape over why I stopped playing.  It was truly refreshing to have a game that not only encouraged, but truly required people to work together to make a kill, and that their drops were random, made you do so regularly.

I could keep going, but this is already getting quite long.  =)

Star Control 2. Sharing planetary data with friends. Coordinates of rainbow worlds. Man, that game was an adventure of note! Probably the best game ever released.

Who else remembers Darklands? It was the first open world fantasty RPG that I know of.

I very literally lost three months of my life to one massive session of Total Annihilation in 1998. The large scale of battles in that game brought my old AMD K6-2 500 processor to a grinding halt at times. Good times.

Red Dead Redemption does it for me. I love the open world, and the sheer amount of shit to do. I also really liked the idea of the setting, not just the Old West, but the Old West as it was being consumed by modern industries and ideals. I also have to add Freelancer, 9 years ago, space combat had never been that good before (scratching my head to think if it has been since actually). It was literally a MMO without other players, with an economy and everything.

Anybody who was there will remember the monstrously epic Battlefield 1942 game that was held at the Organized Chaos LAN in Paarl about 10 yrs ago. It was the most evenly matched and strategically planned affair I have ever seen. Everybody had their roles: air support, mobile infantry, tank battalions etc.The game lasted for just under 3 hrs, and as the tickets on both sides were dropping to close to zero, everybody was on the edge of their seats.

We were playing on Iwo Jima, and the final part of the game eventually boiled down to capturing and holding the base at the top of the mountain right in the centre of the map. And after a crazy infantry battle battle, our team managed to clear out the base, right before one of their planes killed all of us in a bombing run. At this point we only had about 1 ticket left, while they had about 12 or so.

As we respawned, we knew it was going to be a race for each team to see who could get to the top of the hill first, while our flyboys were engaged in a vicious dogfight above our heads. We simply could not afford a single death on our side, so it didn’t look likely that we were gonna make it out of this fight.

Then miraculously, our planes managed to take down all of theirs, without losing a single one of ours, dropping them down to about 8 tickets. We couldn’t believe it, and immediately instructed them to fly over and bomb their advancing troops. We were literally screaming in our seats as we began charging up that slope.

Then when our planes bombed the living shit out of them, dropping them down to 1 or 2 tickets, we went downright batshit crazy. But just as they were about to destroy the final tank rolling up the hill, he randomly fired a single solitary shot back at them. Obviously, as anybody who’s every tried shooting down a fast moving plane with a tank in a game can testify, the shot missed by a mile.
However, the arc of the shot carried it right over the roof of the mountain top base, barely over the crest (pretty much grazing the grass), down the back side slope, and right into my face as I came charging up the mountain with my group, killing me instantly and winning the game for them.

The entire place downright erupted in screams of both triumph and rage, while I just sat there in utter disbelief.

    I’ll second this list!

Not a big fan of FPS games because I suck at them and couldn’t be bothered to “hone my skills”.

Definitely enjoyed the Homeworld series immensely but it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Only two games were better imho: Rome:Total War, and Company of Heroes.

For my old-school choice I’d say Rebellion because it had the perfect balance between espionage, space combat (sort of), and strategic management, and had all the major characters from the movies AND the books.

Currently my friends and I are still completely sold on Company of Heroes. As old as it is, nothing since has come close to having both enjoyable single player and well-balanced multiplayer aspects. We believe the multiplayer is still enjoyable because it goes a lot further than the rock-paper-scissors affair, i.e. knowing how to use terrain and adapting strategic styles that complement each other. Many RTS games suffer from the “whoever builds the Goliath first, wins the game” syndrome which simply devolves into learning “the formula”, as opposed to learning the art of thinking.

That was also extremely awesome, beter than Baldur’s 1 or 2 alone, I agree. But for me, the whole BG package made it beter.

Quake. The lans playing against those Damage clan guys was great.
    Indy: Fate Of Atlantis.

  • jac7

Wow, what a question. I thought I’d knew the
answer(s) off by heart, but this question caused my mind to momentarily lapse
back into complete nostalgia. The list is long, but here’s a few. Let’s try.

    * Alien Trilogy – Being a ridiculously huge fan of
the Alien universe, this old game did a pretty good job of transferring the
gloomy atmosphere from the movies into a game. The soundtrack was killer, so
much that I actually still find myself listening to it on youtube. Best bit:
The moment those door opens to an empty, dark hallway. Here’s the link :

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPzRI555Uwo

    * Resident Evil 2 – This is the game hat started my
love for zombies. Not only was the game a nio noire of scenery, the game was
creepy, violent and atmospheric. The acting was still a tad off, but oscar
worthy compared to it’s predecessor. Best bit: Running from scene to scene,
never really knowing what awaits (except for the token zombie) The only game
where the need to stand still and shoot had any relevance still – frozen in
place because everything is simply too f*ck*ng scary.

    * God of War series – This series was and is simply
grand. It is a colossal adventure and it’s brutal. For me, it is one of those
games that managed to synchronize oil painting quality environments, immersive
music and the most enjoyable gameplay onto a single disk. Best bit – the
in-between mini-games, the ability to destroy all the creatures of myth, and,
of course, to kill a God(s). It’s an epic story.

    * Halo 3 – I stepped into the story late. I hadn’t
played the previous titles yet. I started playing the game and immediately switched
it off. It felt boring, uninspired and cheesy. I shelved it for months. My
brother came over when I was looking after a house, and he asked if I had any
co-op games. I said Halo 3, and he mentioned that he started playing it co-op
with someone else a while back and it was pretty fun. I caved and we started
playing. 10 hours later my eyes were bloodshot, my hands were swollen from
countless high-fives, and the game was finished. My original reception of the
game went out the window the moment I blew up a giant walker with a bazooka.
All of this on the back of a quad, while my brother was steering. Best bit -
Getting onto the side of a chopper, while my bro was flying; telling him to
drop me onto a nearby tank; blowing up the tank, and getting picked up
    afterwards. Also, story.

    * Dead Space – (Favoutire horror game ever) This
game basically took all the fantastic elements of the entire Aliens series.
What I wanted was a game to scare the pants off me, but I ended up shitting
myself instead. For me, this game got everything right. It didn’t feel like a
fabrication, rather some twisted future alternate reality, the visuals make the
game an immersive experience. The environment is hostile and by no means
repetitive. If you moved from the med labs to the mining part of the ship,
there was a clear difference. The element of horror was paramount because Isaac
is a man on his own against something so horrendous, I would vent myself out of
an airlock should I find myself in the same position. The game is different as
it is 100% gameplay, no cutscenes. I only played it at night, one chapter a
night. Best bit – The feeling of complete claustrophobia fighting an enemy that
keeps regenerating, while having to use kinesis to move boxes to secure an exit
    (Bricks were shat).

    * Red Dead Redemption – Open world never looked so
fine and polished. Once again, I found myself just standing in an open field,
rotating the camera 360′ around the character and taking it in. The sheer scale
of the game is a massive achievement on its own, never mind the changing
landscapes, of which there are many. Gameplay wise, the red eye is such a
beautifully executed feature, I could cry bullets. Overall, this game is a
tremendous work of art; the story, the characterization, the fun gameplay. etc.
    Best bit – The redemption.

    * Mass Effect 1&2 – (The best game I’ve ever played) I say game,
because it is one long game. The fact that your decisions and achievements get
carried over into the second game doesn’t make it a sequel, but a continuation.
I don’t really know how to describe how I feel about ME without sounding like a
complete pimple-faced geek, but here it goes. For me, it is a combination of
the brilliance that is Battlestar Galactica’s dark story and themes; Lost’s
great characterization; Star Trek’s gritty interpretation of intergalactic
    space travel and E.T. relations (not Star Wars’ humorous interpretation);
Hard-core science fiction, and a bunch of other things I can’t really begin to
describe. Best bit – the entire game, play it.

  • Helgard Van Rensburg

aaa, Full Throttle…. a bunch Duracell bunnies +  minefield = hours of fun

  • wallywonka

    MDK!!!!

    Best game ever

  • Helgard Van Rensburg

Remembered spending all my savings (R300) for 2 x 32MB SIMM RAM for my P1-133 to play the big maps for Total Annihilation.

  • Paul

    Deus ex, all 3.
    Doom2.
    Cod2 and 4
    Civilization3
    Descent
    Unreal Tournament

Damage clan as in the guys at Randburg waterfront? I used to be part of that team :)

We had some epic times in that clan

  • http://www.facebook.com/karl.wortmann Karl ?? Wortmann

If I had to choose only one game, I’d say Chrono Trigger.
I have actually lost count of the number of times that I’ve played it though to the end.
Great art direction ( can’t really say graphics because it’s on SNES and made in 1995 so by today’s standards it looks terrible )
Good game mechanics and interesting skills that make use of multiple characters.
Awesome soundtrack ( yes, I’m a fan of old-school chiptunes as well )
Great character design and interesting story with a few good twists.
I can’t actually find any fault with the game o_O

More modern games that I’ve enjoyed:
Every single Blizzard and id game out there.
    The Half-Life series.
    Carmageddon 1.

    Games I don’t enjoy:
PC games that are obvious console ports.
Games that are clearly made for the sole purpose of making money; we need games developed my people with a passion for gaming!

  • http://twitter.com/tauriqmoosa Tauriq Moosa

    Older: Battle Chess
Middle: The Sierra and Lucas Arts Point-n-Click, esp. Gabriel Knight, Broken Sword, Monkey Island, Beneath a Steal Sky, Full Throttle and Day of the Tentacle.
Now: Red Dead Redemption, Bioshock, Batman Arkham series, LIMBO, and Ico/Shadow of the Colossus Collection.

  • Venom215

LOL. So would you rather have me talk about Zelda, Privateer, Ultima Online, Dune 2? or older games when typing was the way of life or when you had to still create bootup disks because you couldn’t access all the HIMEM if you allowed dos to properly load. Like Dark Sun (which by the way consumed quite a chunk of my life for a while)

Just because they are well known doesn’t make them less awesome.

  • V@mp

They may not be the best, but i still remember them fondly after all these years.
Flashback, Black Thorne, RE2 (still my favourite in the series),
DOOM(obviously), UNREAL and then more recently
God of War, Gears of War, Portal and Uncharted.

There are actually way too many to mention. Gaming itself IS my best gaming experience  ;)

  • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir James Lenoir

lol, I was joking, sadly dodgy humour doesn’t translate well through text.

  • Venom215

All good. But on a more important note.

Some of these games I haven’t thought about in long time. Brings back good memories. The old faithful games where there wasn’t a shiny arrow to point the way, where if you didn’t play the game religiously you would never remember where to go, never mind how to get there. :P

  • Rpattersonsa

Would have to say the following: Starcraft (I & 2), Deus Ex, Max Payne, Heroes of Might and Magic, Civilisation, Warcraft 2, oh yes and Wacky Wheels!

  • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

I absolutely loved MDK, that’s a great gaming memory

  • http://twitter.com/GeoffChisnall Geoffrey Chisnall

I think once I have finished GOW3 I am going to play SWKOR again. I agree, it was a brilliant game.

  • http://twitter.com/GeoffChisnall Geoffrey Chisnall

Monkey Island 1 + 2, Sam and Max, DOTT
    The Dig
Dr Brain’s Island, Dr Brain’s Castle (who remember this???) – great puzzle game of all time!
    The Incredible Machine

I miss Sierra and LucasArts games :(

Resident Evil 1 and 2 at 2am and the dogs start barking outside.

and last but not least Gabriel Knight series.

  • http://twitter.com/GeoffChisnall Geoffrey Chisnall
  • Oldfart

    You nailed it.

  • Oldfart

Battle Chess on the Apple 2 was vintage Mortal Combat. I did not care about winning, it was the satisfaction of slicing off limbs. 6 different pieces with 6 animations. Great stuff:)

  • http://twitter.com/CaptainNemo42 Charles Small

I have to say, this is the one of the coolest threads… EVER! Lot of nostalgia and nobody is arguing! I never realised I played so many games.

  • Geist

Some of the great games that come to mind:
Jagged Alliance 2 (why can’t the bring the 3rd one to console as well???  Turn based gaming at it’s best.  Loved the whole RPG type gaming and making money to buy better equipment and hire better mercs )
Star Control 2  (about time we see a 4th one…even if it is only to redeem the 3rd one)
Total Annihilation (who remembers the Big Bertha cannons, able to blast things almost anywhere on the map…best strategy game ever.  I consider it more realistic in it’s approach then most of the RTS games of that time.  Can’t see the enemies…just build a radar close to their base and use a radar jammer to hide your radar.)
Kotor 1 and 2 (I enjoyed both…maybe because I started with 2 and bought the first one later on)
    Deus Ex
    Syndicate
System Shock 1 & 2 (another one they could remake…yes, I know Bioshock is sort of like SS, but I loved the setting SS.  The creepy spaceship.  Modifying and repairing weapons)
    Fallout 1, 2
Fallout Tactics  (Fallout Tactics was a better RPG game then most RPG games claim to be.  Slow moving but very rewarding)

  • http://riaan.myopenid.com/ riaan

Star Control 2, now that brings back some fond memories

  • Geist

    Almost forgot
Blood (the first one…When are we going to see a new one of that…Loved the combination of dark humor, FPS and black magic…and blasting stupid mimes)

  • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

And I have to agree, it’s awesome seeing all the usual combatants chatting side by side :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=703002442 Gary Fisher

Flashback, the entire game, going from ‘unconscious lad in a jungle’ to ‘stopping an alien invasion’. Also, Halo 3 stole it’s ending! pffft.

  • CALeGrange

    - Star Control 2, definitely!
    - Stacraft  1 & 2
    - Diablo 2 and
    - That ‘a-bomb level’ in Half Life multiplayer, cant remember the name , but the amount of hours spent on that single map, is ridiculous!

  • CALeGrange

    Remember the UR-QUAN?!….They were BADASS!!!

  • Clgtothemax

Were is our Star Control REMAKE!?! that would make a killer reboot!

  • camper2020

Only one thing come to mind when I think of the “Castle of Dr. Brain” …What’s a henway?

  • camper2020

Decidedly more so than the Spathi.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=631386189 Didier Peinke

Modern Warfare 1 & 2. most amazing game eva!

  • http://twitter.com/GeoffChisnall Geoffrey Chisnall

    Henway…haha.

Shows you how long it’s been. I had the name of the games in the wrong order. :D

Island of Dr Brain. Castle of Dr Brain. Lost Mind of Dr Brain and The Time Warp of Dr Brain.

  • Omlette

Empire Earth 1. Lost whole evenings to that thing…
Command and Conquer: Pre EA only
