Cunningham, a Michigan native, first rose to prominence with the Derby County Wolves, where the tall defender was a highly touted youth club prospect at left back. His participation in a USFC tour of Europe garnered him some exposure and in late summer 2010 he turned down a contract offer from Mainz 05 of the Bundesliga.
In January 2011, Cunningham decided to forgo NCAA soccer a chance to join a rising University of Michigan program by signing with Molde FK of the Norwegian Eliteserien. The 18-year-old joined fellow American Josh Gatt in Ole Gunnar Solksjaer's squad.
Despite his youth, Cunningham was often in the gameday squad in the beginning of the season and made his professional debut against lower-level competition in the Norwegian Cup.
International Career
Cunningham has played with various youth national teams and is eligible for the 2013 U-20 team.
