EUA has launched “Autonomy Scorecard” new report |
(Brussels, 15 November, 2011) The European University Association has launched a major new report which compares university autonomy across 26 European countries. In addition to an in-depth analysis of the current state of institutional autonomy in Europe, the study includes four scorecards which rank and rate higher education systems in four autonomy areas: organisational, financial, staffing and academic autonomy.

IREG Forum: National university rankings gain new ground |

The debate had been initiated by Bob Morse of US News & World Report (How it all begun and where is it heading), Waldemar Siwinski of Perspektywy Education Foundation (National rankings as an integrated part of the global university landscape) and Gero Federkeil of CHE Centre for Development of Higher Education (What can national rankings learn from the U-Multirank project).

(Washington DC, 4 September 2011) The Sunday edition of the Washington Post in the article U.S. News college rankings are denounced but not ignored, analyzes the phenomenon of the US News & World Report ranking. Bob Morse is a wonk, a number-cruncher who works in a messy office at a struggling publishing company in Georgetown. He’s also one of the most powerful wonks in the country, wielding the kind of power that elicits enmity and causes angst.

Academic Ranking of World Universities 2011 |
(Shanghai, 15 August, 2011) The Center for World-Class Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University released today the 2011 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), marking its 9th consecutive year of measuring the performance of top universities worldwide.
Harvard University tops the 2011 list; other Top 10 universities are: Stanford, MIT, Berkeley, Cambridge, Caltech, Princeton, Columbia, Chicago and Oxford. In Continental Europe, ETH Zurich (23rd) in Switzerland takes first place, followed by Paris-Sud (40th) and Pierre and Marie Curie (41st) in France. The best ranked universities in Asia are University of Tokyo (21st) and Kyoto University (27th) in Japan.

Greater transparency in the Albanian higher education sector |
(Tirana, 15 July 2011) The Albanian Ministry for Education and Science, too, wants prospective students to be able to find independent information about the country’s HEIs in the future. The CHE was commissioned to carry out a project (supported by the World Bank) to develop and test a concept with the Albanian Public Agency for Accreditation of Higher Education (APAAL) that would enable comparisons of Albanian HEIs on the basis of different indicators. The results of this project, a first ranking of four subjects, were presented at the closing conference in Tirana.

IREG Observatory new members from Sweden, Lithuania, Romania and the Netherlands |
(Paris, 19 May 2011) At the General Assembly meeting in Paris, 17 May 2011, IREG Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence unanimously accepted four new members: Dutch Inspectorate of Education (the Netherlands), Lucian Blaga University (Romania), Lund University (Sweden) and Mykolas Romeris University (Lithuania).

UNESCO Forum debates academic rankings |
(Paris, 18 May, 2011) More than 250 participants from nearly 70 countries took part at UNESCO Global Forum - Rankings and Accountability in Higher Education: Uses and Misuses organized by UNESCO in collaboration with OECD and The World Bank. IREG Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence was very present at the meeting both as speakers, panelists and participants. Among the Forum’s speakers and panelists there were; Jan Sadlak, President of the IREG Observatory and two Vice-presidents Nian Cai Liu of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Gero Federkeil of the CHE-Centre for Higher Education Development as well as Ben Sowter of the QS World University Rankings.

IREG Ranking Audit Rules adopted |
(Paris, 17 May 2011) The Executive Committee of IREG Observatory on Ranking and Excellence adopted the IREG Ranking Audit Rules. The document describes in detail the criteria and procedure that will be used in assessing the quality of rankings.
