"It's as if every one of [the soldiers] was his kid brother," Dolores Hope once said.
His 1966 Vietnam Christmas show, when televised, was watched by an estimated 65 million people, the largest audience of his career.
In 1997, Congress named Hope an honorary U.S. veteran, citing his decades of entertaining troops around the world. He was the first person to receive that extremely rare distinction.
When informed of the honor, Hope was uncharacteristically serious. "I've been given many awards in my lifetime," he said, "but to be numbered among the men and women I admire the most is the greatest honor I have ever received."

Much help is needed acquiring photos of our KIA's, possibly the easiest source may be high school yearbooks, if you live near a town where one of these men lived, your efforts to visit the local library and scan their photo will be greatly appreciated.
| 1st and 2nd Battalions 5th US Cavalry, 2nd Battalion 12th US Cavalry were the infantry battalions that made up the 2nd Brigade, 1st Air Cavalry Division, Airmobile during the Vietnam War. The infantry has always been about walking and walking a lot. The Vietnam war was no different and perhaps some of the worst terrain the US Army ever fought a war in. The equipment, such as the "Huey" helicopter, M-16 automatic rifle, M-60 machine gun and Alice packs are still in use today. I don't want to imagine the Vietnam war without them, the Huey saved men that would have perished in other conflicts with the "MEDEVAC" and allowed execution of battles at any place and at any time. For the first time in the history of air re-supply, it became possible to deliver food, water and ammunition in substantial quantities to an exact location in a timely manner. I also don't want to imagine that war without the men I served with, nor do I want to imagine these pages without their input. Most Vietnam war casualty data bases only contain the division of assignment, therefore it is up to us to fill in the blanks on the Memorial pages. To say this will be difficult would be an understatement, some of our brothers were known as "Smitty", "Pop", "Tex", Tennessee, etc., so without a lot of research as well as help from the living, we may never get all the men accounted for. As of January 2002, there is about 70 Mb of reserve disk space for photographs ( That's a lot, about 1400 pics), all units of the 2nd Brigade are encouraged to submit photographs, writings and testimonials to this web site, this invitation very much includes family members. If someone on the Memorial pages has a decoration such as a Bronze or Silver Star, Distinguished Service Cross, please let us know. Personal comments for all the men on the Memorials will be added to their names at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Page, if you knew any of these men, I encourage you to do the same. |

1st Battalion, 5th United States Cavalry Regiment was formed in 1855. From its inception, it was an elite unit, with the Secretary of War Jefferson Davis hand-picking its members from a dozen states. In its 144-year history, the Battalion has participated in nine wars and has been awarded 62 campaign streamers. 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry and it’s companies have been awarded over 20 unit citations and boast 45 members of the battalion who have received the nation’s highest award for bravery, the Congressional Medal of Honor.
