Villagers protest over Sri Lanka tourism expansion

Help

Sri Lanka has opened itself up to more tourism opportunities and companies are scrambling to take advantage of the prime real estate.

Luxury resorts are planned for the islands off the country's west coast.

Nearby villagers say they have been barred from their habitual fishing grounds and are losing their livelihoods.

Hundreds gathered in the capital, Colombo, to protest.

Charles Haviland reports.
