Walking from our hotel towards the Bund on October 1, we happened to see these policemen getting ready for...something! A demonstration, perhaps?

Stay on the crosswalk!! (Crossing the Bund)

This seemed to be the main function of the army of police they deployed on National Day- keeping everybody within the lines of the crosswalk. (On other days, they didn't care where you crossed or whether a car almost hit you!)

Nanjing Road on National Day

Nanjing Rd. "pedestrian mall" was certainly full of pedestrians on Oct.1. So many, in fact, that they had to stop the cross traffic that usually prevents it from being truly pedestrian-friendly.
