Retail jobs are popular with older workers. Openings are frequent, hours are flexible and many part-time opportunities are available.

Many retailers welcome seniors as customer service employees or cashiers because they have found that older workers are very good at making customers happy, according to Coleman. Other retail jobs available for seniors may include retail manager, floor supervisor, stock-room associate, greeter or food company demonstration worker.

Seasonal work also gives retirees ample opportunities to work without the requirement of a year-round grind. Big retail chains, grocery stores and hardware stores all are a good bet. This year, major retailers such as Target Corp., Kohl's Corp., Macy's Inc. and J.C. Penney Co. Inc. have said they plan to add more help for the holiday season in November and December than last year. Kohl's alone intends to add more than 40,000 seasonal workers.

RE: 5 Hot Jobs for Retirees

It looks like Bnet deleted most of the comments this story generated. Many people were quite offended. But consider this -- Maybe the story is accurate in the sense that these are the only sorts of jobs that now exist for older people. Our world may have changed so completely that experience, skills and education no longer have value. Fast Company ran a story this morning titled, "Why Hire a PhD When a Self Taught Kid is Just as Good?" Maybe this is a glimpse of the future. How Sad!
