Election 2011: results

Monday, 9 May 2011

Thurrock Council remains in "no overall control" following the local elections on Thursday (5 May).

With 25 seats needed for an overall majority - there are 49 councillors - the count of votes on Friday, saw Labour pick up two extra seats to reach 24, the Conservatives increase their numbers by one, to reach 22. Two of the three remaining seats are held by independents and the third by a Concerned Conservative.

The Conservative Party reclaimed Corringham and Fobbing and Little Thurrock Rectory wards - both of which they had won the previous time these seats were fought for in 2007 - from the Concerned Conservative group on the council.

Labour picked up Tilbury Riverside and Thurrock Park which had been won by the BNP in 2007 and defeated former Conservative cabinet member Barry Johnson to take Ockendon from the Conservatives.

Details of the election are available via the Local Election tab on the council's website (www.thurrock.gov.uk) or directly, in summary (http://www.thurrock.gov.uk/democracy/content.php?page=elections_2011) or in ward-by-ward detail (http://www.thurrock.gov.uk/democracy/content.php?page=wrd).

Returning Officer, Thurrock Council chief executive Graham Farrant also announced the local outcome of the referendum into the Alternative Vote (AV) system for Westminster elections. Of the 37,844 votes cast, 28,284 were against changing the system and 9,307 in favour (a majority of 18,977). The remainder were spoiled for a number of reasons.

Mr Farrant said afterwards: "I would like to thank each and every person who helped with, worked on, or took part in this election. We all know there were issues last year, but I think everything went smoothly in 2011."
