: About Me

Donna Hicks has had an intense passion for writing for over twenty-five years. Donna particularly enjoys writing to criminal justice, international politics, U.S. law and justice, global issues, history, medical, social sciences, antiques and art, although she writes on many topics. 

 Donna recently enjoyed serving in a thirteen month assignment as a member of Helium's Distance Learning Criminal Justice Writers Group, Distance Learning Culture & Arts, Distance Learning Social Sciences, Distance Learning Nursing, Doctoral and Distance Learning Sciences Groups, and is looking forward to additional short or long-term assignments in the future. 

Donna recently was selected as "grand prize winner" in the Helium/Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting/ Population Services International (PSI) contest "World Population Approaches 7 Billion." Additionally, after a 1st place tie-breaker, she received the second place award from Helium at the end of the contest, based on the contest leader board. Donna has felt very honored to have been selected as winner in this prestigious contest. Her winning article will appear in the September 2011 issue of PSI's quarterly print magazine, "Impact," which is distributed in sixty countries.

She was declared winner in the 2008 Paul Laurence Dunbar Memorial Poetry Prize Adult Category with more than 1,000 entries having been submitted.

Donna has a  B.S. degree in Criminal Justice, an A.A.S. degree in Law Enforcement, and an A.A.S. degree in Community Based Corrections, with minors in history, political science and sociology. 

Thankful for the opportunity to focus more on writing, Donna has left the criminal justice field, with several years experience working at a state prison for male felony offenders, a parole case manager, adult protective services case manager, with additional experience in non-profit agencies working with homeless and  substance abuse populations, mental health, dual diagnosis, elderly and disabled adult populations. She has related training and certifications in Medicaid and Medicare issues.

Donna enjoys antique shops and flea markets, whether adding to her own collections, or selling in the antiques and flea market circuits, as well as researching history, and reading in general. Her real passion will always be writing.

She is still working on not overwatering her indoor houseplants, and not forgetting to water her outdoor plants and flowers. Thus far, the dead plants have won.
