The "occupiers" would accomplish more if they would show up on voting day and cast a ballot. They would accomplish more if they financially supported and participated in a political party of their choice. The odd protest down our streets will do little to rally the vast majority of Canadians to their side. Down the road maybe they will be better organized with a few solid and well-framed issues to promote, but until then I doubt that either Harper or Canadian business leaders are quaking in their boots after this weekend. Right on cue, the federal opposition parties warned the Harper government not to ignore the protesters as they tried to grab a tiny bit of the media and political spotlight for themselves. Then again that is pretty normal behaviour for them.
The Saskatchewan Party's platform likely won't contain any major policy initiatives. After all, people are happy with the status quo and two-way elections generally lead to a race to the centre, where each party tries to align as closely as possible to the median voter without alienating their support base.
Memo to future debate producers: Cut the extraneous set-up material. And don't move Romney away from Perry on the debate stage. The dynamic between these two candidates is too compelling to tamper with.
It's clear we need to rethink business as usual, but it should start with how business leaders are trained to view their roles, analyze risks, and understand the moral implications of strategic decisions.
EthicalOil.org has a reputation for using just about anything to promote Canada's tar sands. This Monday it was my turn to get 'tarred' as the website's spokesperson Kathryn Marshall declared herself to be on "the very same page" as me. The assertion could not be further from the truth.
I can hear you now: "But Richard, dieting is not a hobby!" Well, if you're taking into account the classic definition of the word "hobby," you're probably right. But that's really not my point.
Why do we stop running, spinning, jumping, singing out loud just for the joy of it? Why do we care if no one else is? Why should we care if people think we are bonkers? Just because we are grownups we are supposed to stop throwing our bodies on the ground and smelling the earth?
Where the pushers of Occupy Wall Street have erred so grievously is in comparing their struggle to that of the brave Arab Spring protesters who, even today, continue to bare their chests to real bullets. Protest-envy and the desire to suffer and to "win" like they did in the Arab Spring is couched in psuedo-militaristic terminology like "occupy" and "rebellion."
What exactly is the "gossip" here? Is it the fact that this is an issue that involves the breakup of a marriage and is therefore a personal matter which Camp has no interest in? Well, the fact that a woman is possibly being hurt is something we should talk about and care about a great deal.
What's so significant about this Washington Post photo is how it plants the seeds of demonization in a movement that has been overwhelmingly peaceful and non-violent so far.
Imagine being in total darkness, knowing if you fall you die, and being so completely out of breath and energy that you can only move forward an inch at a time. I'm wasted. Finished. Out of energy. My only savior at this point is the sun.
If you are the parent of a child between the ages of one and four, you will spend a torturous amount of time squatting ungracefully in front of them in order to zip up coats, tie shoes, wipe noses and scrub away crusted-on ketchup. Stand in your front hallway and squat. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.
I feel that the conquest of asthma, along with associated disorders where the immune system makes drastic, sometimes lethal mistakes, depends on understanding the innate intelligence in every cell.
What does interim NDP Leader Nycole Turmel, have in common with Phillip Brown, General Manager of the City of Toronto's Shelter Housing Support and 65 employees at the Hospital for Sick Children? By my estimation, each of them earns an income that grants them membership to Canada's demonized one per cent.
In 1968, Andy Warhol said, "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes." The future is here, but with the wrong click, that could easily turn into 15 minutes of infamy.
Many poor families have at least one working parent but can't keep their heads above water and their children above poverty.
Here we go again! Another conspiracy theory -- this time by a woman who has written a 600-page book (Me and Lee) claiming she and Lee Harvey Oswald were lovers and that instead of assassinating John Kennedy in 1963, he was trying to save him.
As the old Zen saying goes, "If not now, when?" There is no better time to start or revive a practice to nourish your body, heart and spirit, actively shaping your vital life.
