More people who are diagnosed with cancer are surviving, according to a new report issued by the CDC.

Cancer treatment has come a long way over the last 25 years, meaning that now being diagnosed with a form of the disease is no longer viewed as a death sentence.

Cancer patients, depending on the type of cancer they are diagnosed with have an array of different treatment options, ranging from surgery and radiation, to chemotherapy.

The CDC says that now one in 20 adults diagnosed with the disease are beating it, thanks also in large part to earlier detection.

40 years ago, according to the CDC there were upwards of three million Americans living with a history of cancer, but this number now is over 11 million.

“There are some cancers that we can’t prevent and they are terrible tragedies,” said CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden. “But there are many that are preventable.”
