A Happy Anniversary For Kylie

11/07/2010

Twenty-two years ago to the week since her number one debut album Kylie!  The Album (1988) first entered the UK charts, the first by a female solo artist to exceed sales of two million, Kylie Minogue is at the top of the Official Albums Chart for a fifth time as new release Aphrodite leaps straight to number one, the Official Charts Company announces today.

A delighted Kylie said:

“I’ve been completely overwhelmed by the reaction to Aphrodite and to hear that the album has gone to number 1 is the most amazing news.  I am ecstatic!  My hopes for this album were that people would be moved, that the songs could bring about emotion.  The euphoric heart of this album has taken flight and the response has been nothing short of incredible.  My thanks as always to the many talented and dedicated people with whom I work and the fans who have been so supportive all these years.”

Aphrodite is the eleventh studio album of Kylie’s career, the tenth to go Top 10 and the fourth to get to number one (Enjoy Yourself (1989) and Fever (2001) following Kylie! The Album).  Her other number one album was a greatest hits package released in 1992.  The only studio album not to break into the Top 10, Let’s Go To It, peaked at number fifteen in 1991.

There is just one other new entry in this week’s Official Albums Chart Top 10:  Enrique Iglesias scores his fourth Top 10 album with Euphoria straight in at number six.

In the Official Singles Chart, JLS claim their third number one single with This Club Is Alive straight in at the top following last year’s Beat Again and Everybody In Love.

There are two other new entries in the Official Singles Chart Top 10: Yolanda Be Cool vs D Cup’s We No Speak Americano is straight in at number five and 30H3’s My First Kiss featuring Kesha is straight in at number seven.
