Bahrain will host the 21st edition of the Gulf Cup instead of the Iraqi city of Basra, the region’s football bosses decided in their ad hoc meeting which was held in Kuwait on Monday.

The meeting was attended by the FA chiefs in the six Gulf countries plus Yemen and Iraq.
Shaikh Talal Al Fahad, president of the Kuwaiti Football Association said in an official statement that while they appreciate the efforts and arrangements made by the Iraqi football governing body, it has been decided to hold the 21st Gulf Cup in Bahrain on December 21, 2012 or Januray 2013.

“Basra will host the 22nd edition of the tournament in December 2014 or January 2015,” the Kuwaiti top sports official said.

“The reasons behind that is to ensure the capability of Iraq to host the tournament in the most ideal manner,” he confirmed, but he declined to cite any security or political concerns for the decision.
