Velasquez-Dos Santos will be lone fight on UFC on FOX 1, regardless of length

If you want to see Clay Guida (29-11 MMA, 9-5 UFC) battle Ben Henderson (14-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC) on Nov. 12, you better be next to a computer.

While many MMA fans have openly hoped for a quick ending in that night's Cain Velasquez (9-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC) vs. Junior Dos Santos (13-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC) main event in order for Guida vs. Henderson to also air on the UFC on FOX broadcast, UFC president Dana White today said that's not going to happen.

During a conference call to promote the event, which takes place in Anaheim, Calif., White said the featured bout will be the only fight on the broadcast, even if it "only goes 10 seconds."

The UFC and FOX deal doesn't technically begin until 2012, and the Nov. 12 event is simply a one-hour teaser show. The evening's 10-bout undercard streams free on Facebook and FOX.com.

White also revealed today that in addition to FOX in the U.S., the Velasquez vs. Dos Santos fight will also air live in 15 additional countries, including Canada and the U.K.

MAIN CARD (FOX)
  • Champ Cain Velasquez vs. Junior Dos Santos (for heavyweight title)
PRELIMINARY CARD (Facebook and FOX.com)
  • Clay Guida vs. Ben Henderson
  • Pablo Garza vs. Dustin Poirier
  • Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto vs. Darren Uyenoyama
  • Ricardo Lamas vs. Cub Swanson
  • Clay Harvsion vs. DaMarques Johnson
  • Robert Peralta vs. Mackens Semerzier
  • Paul Bradley vs. Mike Pierce
  • Matt Lucas vs. Aaron Rosa
  • Alex Caceres vs. Cole Escovedo

JDS by KO round 2

J0KER on Nov 02, 2011 at 2:43 pm ET
I say JDS KO in 1. Kongo showed a weakness in Cain's chin and JDS has far better striking, Take down defense and Jiu Jitsu.

Junior won't last more than two rounds

rosa_escobar on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:46 pm ET
The last thing that jds will see before he falls to the canvas will be BROWN PRIDE

infestructure on Nov 02, 2011 at 4:40 pm ET
and the last thing Cains gonna see before he gets lynched is "White Pride".
On a serious note, Cain has got this, his bullish wrestling, powerful takedowns and GnP will be too much for JDS to handle, unless his awesome striking wmanages to stop Cain on the way in, but I doubt it. Damn, these are two of my favorite fighters, and I hate to see either of them on the receiving end of a KO, but its gonna happen.

blloyd29 on Nov 02, 2011 at 5:13 pm ET
I had a good idea I wanted to share.  The comments section of MMAjunkie has gotten very difficult to follow with all the reply's going in different sections and constant meaningless posts.  (and a lot more users over the years) Rather than people littering the site with "+1" 's, simple dissagreements and all the way up to feeding the trolls, how about adding a simple "agree"/"dissagree" button to each post?

Similar to Facebook's "like"?  This way we would clean up a ton of messages, no longer feel the need to feed trolls as we could simply rack up an absurd amount of "dissagree" hits rather than respond.  Just an idea that I e-mailed to the junkie staff, if enough people do the same, we might finally rid ourselves of unneeded posts and spend more time reading good arguments.

BehindTheVeilOfMaya on Nov 02, 2011 at 5:37 pm ET
I'd rather have an edit button than something that will allow people to whore even more attention on the site.

blloyd29 on Nov 02, 2011 at 6:28 pm ET
I don't mean link it to Facebook, I meant use a similar method like Facebook's "like" button.

SanFranpsycho on Nov 02, 2011 at 6:42 pm ET
Thats how the Daily Camera does it for Univ of Colorado Football. You give people and + or minus based on their comments and everyone has a revolving score, one to 100. It helps you see who spews constant nonsense and who is worth reading.

KaliRudeBoy on Nov 02, 2011 at 11:13 pm ET
I like that idea...it sounds fair, with the caveat that you cannot "like" or "+1" your own posts.

cbchwa on Nov 02, 2011 at 11:58 pm ET
Screw the facebook "like" crap. I really hate that feature. I'd rather have thumbs up / thumbs down icons instead. I'd even settle for the agree / disagree thing too.

However, junkie should implement a "block" feature like in facebook so if you're tired of reading trolls' comments you can just "block" them and never have to see their postings ever again.

legsDontGoThatWay on Nov 02, 2011 at 5:39 pm ET
It would be good, like BTJunkie but it wouldn't clear any "litter"- people rarely write +1. Everything else would be the same, surely?

I know my ideas would get more downvotes than upvotes e.g. saying "casinos are a con operation" - that will get voted down by casino workers, and gamblers, and some UFC *********s whilst mathematicians who know I'm right probably have better things to do with their time than upvote me.

but the reason it won't happen is that it would take work to implement it on the site

Similar to the one those guys had yesterday about greco and freestyle wrestling yesterday. Truely a JUNKIE classic!

BehindTheVeilOfMaya on Nov 03, 2011 at 12:29 pm ET
There are far more people correcting peoples grammar on this site than the +1's. The OP wants to "clean up" the comment section and by being able to fix a mistake you made in a post is more valuable to me than reading the most upvoted comments. Just because a comment gets upvoted doesn't mean it's right or the most intriguing thing out there. It will just mean that someone posted something that was inline with the popular opinion out there. Honestly I could do without either feature as neither are that important, but if I had to choose between the two I'd take the edit button. It's moot though as I doubt any of it will ever happen.

BehindTheVeilOfMaya on Nov 03, 2011 at 12:39 pm ET
Not to mention, if you go to youtube look at what those thumbs have done for it. Almost every video has top comments that are there simply because the poster wanted the top comment. The "roses are red" stupid comment rhymes. Like I said, I'd prefer to stay away from the things that will cause people to try and whore attention. The like dislike thing would do nothing to stem the tide of trolls Junkie seems to be getting these days. It will do nothing to discourage the nut huggers from bashing everyone but their favorite fighter. It will only start a popularity contest and give trolls a new meta game to play called "how many downvotes can I get for a single comment". No, Junkie is fine without it. Most of the time I can tell if someone is trolling based on their name (either it's a fanboy name or a name I've seen before that has said stupid stuff) or the sheer number of replies and the whole point of these comments is to start conversations. If the only comments anyone ever sees are the ones everyone agrees with then how is that going to start conversations? The notifications of a reply would be really nice though with a link to said comment.

infestructure on Nov 02, 2011 at 6:41 pm ET
Yeah that wasnt a reply to my comment at all. But I do agree, at the moment, I dont read any posts by anyone with DIAZ in the username, or any posts MADE UP ENTIRELY OF CAPS. I also won't read any posts that don't have capital letters at the start of sentences. I'm not a grammar nazi, I just have learned that more often than not, I dont respect what people who write like this have to say. And so yes, if one comment like "Cain has nothing in the tank" gets lots of dislikes, I'll be able to skip right past it. Good idea I think.

We haven't seen what JDS can do to Brock so it's hard to predict what JDS can do to Cain or vis versa. It's all speculations right now but we'll find out in just over a week.

IB4U on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:03 pm ET
I hope Cain's got his cardio and no cage rust.
Can't pick a winner here.  Can go either way.

I am just happy winner will face Brock/AO in 2012.

Bummer for the lone fight.  Guess it's all going to be commercials and talks about JDS & Cain before/after the fight.

TheCommish on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:17 pm ET
The are going to air pre-taped highlights of other fights.  FOX is already hosting pre and post fight shows on FX/FUEL, so don't expect too much coverage of JDS/Cain during the FOX hour.

There will also be tons of hype building up Brock/AO so expect to see a few trailers for that PPV.

theideaman on Nov 02, 2011 at 6:45 pm ET
I disagree about the weakness part, I think if anything he showed that even after getting knocked down he can still put you on your back. I'd like to see any heavyweight take a shot from Kongo on the chin and not drop

TorontoMMA on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:22 pm ET

its a huge fight but with all these cards  a 1 fight show seems too little. Fox shoulda done 2 hours wiit 3-4 fights cause a 10 sec fight will do very little to hook people ill tell you that. weak

ActionMMA on Nov 02, 2011 at 5:26 pm ET
Wow One hour time slot for one fight.  I doubt this fight will go 5 rounds but even if it does sure seems like we are going to bein for alot of Goldie yacking and commercials

cbchwa on Nov 03, 2011 at 12:07 am ET
Probably 15 minutes of introduction to what UFC/MMA is and walkins by the 2 fighters. Then 30 min for the fight (if it goes 5 rounds + corner time b/w rounds). Then 5 min of them announcing the winner with Rogan interview. Then some small talk to kill time.

If the fight ends early, they should just have a camera pointed at the ring girls for the rest of the hour.

brandon2691 on Nov 02, 2011 at 2:42 pm ET

BehindTheVeilOfMaya on Nov 03, 2011 at 12:49 pm ET
Millions of others who do care will turn in, but honestly I doubt that a large number of MMA fans or casual/first time viewers would say "O there is a $50 boxing PPV on, I'd rather watch that then this free MMA card". I'm sure there will a few, but still not enough to justify it. That, and the main fight that everyone wants to see that isn't the title fight is Bendo/Guida. Would it be impossible to put that on the televised portion? I mean it's a number one contenders fight with two of the most popular LW's for crying out loud. They could of shown the big guys (JDS/Cain) and the little guys (Guida/Bendo) and made a lot more people happy and give the new fans a chance to see the variety, but they choose to bow to the boxing PPV instead. It's disappointing to say the least.

frankiii on Nov 02, 2011 at 2:43 pm ET
One fight only?  Damn.

I bet they're hoping for a solid 5 rounds but I doubt it.

Bigfootmma on Nov 02, 2011 at 2:51 pm ET
What the hell are they going to fill the rest of the hour with if it's over by vicious ko in like 1:30 of the first?

bigdmmafan on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:01 pm ET
Even if it ends in like 5 seconds between intro's, post fight rap up, and commercials it will last half an hour and then I'm sure FOX has something lined up either COPS or The Simpsons or something.

OSP on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:11 pm ET
Well first off, it's not going to be an hour...  it's only going to be about 40 minutes of air time...

If the fight goes the distance, there will be maybe 10 minutes of setup - this is the story of the UFC, the fighter's story, some highlights, the walk-ins, tale of the tape/rules/staredown... then 25 minutes of the fight... then 5 minutes for the decision, quick recap/analysis, promote the next event - peace out.

If the fight last 10 seconds, there will still be 10 minutes of setup, then 10 seconds of fight...  For the remaining 29:50 I see it breaking down like this:  5 min. gushing about the fight w/ tons of replay... then analysis of the night's previous fights with highlights for another 10 minutes, 5 more minutes of the history of the UFC, and full promos for the next event (including live interviews) for the final 10 minutes.

Yeah, the time slot is an hour and the fight time itself can last a maximum of 25 minutes, but I think people will be surprised at how quickly it goes regardless of the outcome.  You gotta think about how the prelims on Spike look - if both fights last 10 seconds, they fill it really quickly with content... sure, sometimes they use earlier fights, but they still fill it no problem.  I gotta believe that they have this thing mapped out with EVERY possible scenario in mind... there's no way they wouldn't, it's too important.

Another thing to remember... this isn't really even the first 'event' on Fox.  They aren't even contracted to do anything until 2012...  this is a 'practice' run...  Sure, they want to hit a home run, but if they don't completely knock it out of the park or completely strike out, it won't matter... they'll learn and make it better for next time.

MMAok on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:48 pm ET

29 minutes- you forgot the 1 min between rounds.

OSP on Nov 02, 2011 at 4:15 pm ET
They won't show that:

1) that's commercial time

2) too much colorful language to deal with while live

MMAok on Nov 02, 2011 at 5:42 pm ET

As Dana stated- "we are going to be on not a 7 second, but a 30 second delay just in case of offensive language". Lots of time for the censors to hit the button! lol

MrMiyagi on Nov 02, 2011 at 5:28 pm ET
if the fights goes 10 seconds, there will be lots of commercials to fill the empty space.

KaliRudeBoy on Nov 02, 2011 at 11:18 pm ET
Pretty good explanation for people.  I think JDS will knock Cain out.  Could go either way, buy watching JDS boxing in the preview show, I am just thinkinb a brutal uppercut will lead to a Brown Pride faceplant.  Other than that outcome, I see it going to a decision, unless Junior gasses and gets tko'd.  Or, we could all be surprised  by a submission victory.  Can't wait to see the fight!

trianglechaeled on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:40 pm ET
I just can't see the fight going the distance. The last time the heavyweight championship went to a decision was back in early 2007 when couture won it. The UFC could atleast make a highlights clip of all the action that went on prior to the title fight. That would definitely capture the attention of the new viewers.

sdaccount on Nov 02, 2011 at 2:48 pm ET
Wow.  I know the FOX invested a load of cash in the UFC, but for a good card with a HW title bout to get only one aired fight?  This fight would have gotten great PPV #'s IMO, to air only one fight on TV...thats gotta sting a little.   A HW title fight that headlines a card....used only as a teaser for 2012.  I'm guessing FOX has some weight in the decisions.  If I remember correctly, a question was asked if the FOX cards would have title fights.  If I recall, I think Dana stated that title fights would be PPV events, but FOX would still get great cards.  Not only did FOX get a HW title fight, but its used only as a teaser.

At least the rest of the card will be shown live stream.

Mcmax3000 on Nov 02, 2011 at 11:55 pm ET
When they were asked if the FOX fights would be title fights, it was Lorenzo (not Dana) that answered and basically said they would be big shows. He never said there would be no title fights, he just didn't want to answer solely with a 'Yes' because then there would be people expecting every FOX show to be a title fight.

Stockton_209 on Nov 02, 2011 at 2:48 pm ET
I don't understand, what if this fight actually does only go 10 seconds? Realistically I don't see it going past two. What are they going to show for the remainder?

anyone know if you'll be able to watch the main event online through fox.com or is it only the under card?

Slapchop138 on Nov 02, 2011 at 2:52 pm ET
I can't understand this as a business decision.  Dana has always been publicly critical of boxing for having essentially one-fight cards.  If the goal of being on Fox is to bring the sport to a new audience, and convince people to try MMA over boxing, why does television only get a one-fight card?

JW1978 on Nov 02, 2011 at 2:55 pm ET
You beat me by two minutes! I'm glad I'm not the only one that sees the absurdity of this.

TheCommish on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:21 pm ET
Dana rips boxing because you have to pay $60 for 1 fight.  This is nowhere near an apples-to-apples comparison, because although it is only 1 fight, it is FREE.

JW1978 on Nov 02, 2011 at 4:56 pm ET
It's not just with PPV, though. It happens with free boxing as well. That's one of the reasons my interest in boxing waned over the years. Although this card is free, and although it's not necessarily part of the Fox deal to air this fight, I just question whether the UFC is putting their best foot forward by guaranteeing only one fight. In terms of introducing new fans to the sport, the only thing worse IMO than a 10-second finish or a 25-minute bore fest would be if one of the main event fighters got hurt and had to be pulled from the card.

bigdmmafan on Nov 02, 2011 at 2:58 pm ET
Well when FOX tells you they only want the 1 fight, what are you gonna do? Sure you can try and convince them to air another fight but at the end of the day it's FOX that controls how much time they dictate to mma.

coreymb on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:05 pm ET
Exactly. And let's not forget that this card is more of a teaser. This is not apart of the four big fox cards per year. People tend to forget that as well.

JW1978 on Nov 02, 2011 at 2:54 pm ET
I don't get it. Dana has stated in the past a point I agree with: one of the big problems with boxing is that often times, they do not show undercard fights, so if the main event(s) end quickly, fans are left holding the bag, listening to banter for the rest of the telecast. I got burned more than once, either wasting money on a PPV that ended in less than a round or making plans on a Saturday night to watch the fights, only to have those fights end and it be too late to do anything else. I guess on the bright side is that in my second example, these fights are early enough that it shouldn't ruin a Saturday night if it ends early, but still, with this many fights on the card, I think its a fairly safe assumption that at least one of them will end within a time frame that would allow it to be shown on t.v. if Cain/JDS ended quickly.

OSP on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:27 pm ET
1) This isn't a PPV.

2) All you have is an hour to work with and you have a 25-min title fight for that hour, there's not a whole lot you can do - especially considering you don't really have an hour, you have 40-43min due to commercials.

3)  This isn't about you or me, the big/hardcore fans...  It's about all the other people who've never bought a UFC PPV, never heard of MMA Junkie, and who wouldn't even notice it being on at the bar if it wasn't for the Ooo's and Ahh's when someone get's KO'ed.  The fact that it's on broadcast TV, free, featuring a HW title fight, and being promoted well almost guarantees it will get eyes.  If the fight goes the distance - you'll make fans (as long as it's a good fight)... If the fight last 10 seconds - you can still make fans (everyone likes a KO), especially if you use the other time wisely (history of the sport, in-depth talk about the rules/skills, recap earlier fights, etc, etc).

4)  If your Saturday night is ruined by an event ending early or even sucking and going the distance, then you're too old - LOL.  Party don't start till midnight!  And frankly, if people are coming over to watch the fights, they tend to stick around to booze/complain for a while even under the worst circumstances.

5)  You still have full access to all of the fights online... for free.

rockwell on Nov 02, 2011 at 2:59 pm ET
Weak.

Cannot believe that Guida/Henderson is not on live TV.  Guess they have to give the attendees of the event something, other than the other eight "filler" bouts, but Guida/Henderson could be on the UK card this weekend, UFC 139, or TUF 14 Finale.  My goodness.

Hope this does not end up like Geraldo opening Al Capone's vault.

WTH is the contingency plan if by chance Cain or JDS would get hurt or pull out sometime before next Saturday.  I mean Paul Taylor was allegedly involved in a minor traffic accident the week of the bout with Njokuani.

jimmy2times on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:01 pm ET
Man this fight is like watching two of your best friends throw down. You like them both and don't want to pick a winner. Only hope they both come out healthy and in good shape.

Having said that, here is my humble assessment of the fight.  Although I do think that it's going to be a very close and the win can go either way at any moment, I think that will ONLY be the case in the 1st round. All of JDS' KO victories have come in the 1st round. Everyone else that has survived the first round storm has ended up losing a decision to him. This is because JDS's strikes lose major steam as the fight goes on since he puts so much of himself into every swing. The only guy to get taken out by JDS after the first round is an old CroCop (3rd round) who in my opinion wouldn't last a single round against Cain Velasquez. JDS' only chance in this fight is his early KO power and accurate hands. I expect Velasquez team to be fully aware of that and devise a plan to nullify it enough in the 1st round to take JDS into the latter rounds where his striking is a much less of a threat. Cain has TKO victories in the 1ST, 2ND, & 3rd round. He will be dangerous the entire fight. (Not saying JDS wont be dangerous. Just saying Cain only gets better as the fight goes on and has shown that he can finish a fight in any round.)

Prediction: C. Velasquez via TKO stoppage round 3.

cage_rage on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:35 pm ET
I agree with the first part. However, I think that JDS has KO power in ANY round. The guys that went the distance (Carwin, Nelson) are tough SOBs with solid/proven chins. Cain's chin is suspect at best. If Cain wins, it's by decision, otherwise I have JDS in this one.

Don't care where they're on as long as i can watch them, thought it would have been awesome for the UFC if they could show Guida Vs. Henderson, that fight is going to be nuts!

rosa_escobar on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:17 pm ET
guida vs henderson doesn't interest me one bit.

SingleLeg on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:03 pm ET
Can't imagine this was their original plan here.  Not sure what was happened, but with the Henderson vs. Guida winner likely in line for a title shot, you'd think they'd have just put that might on the main card the week before or the week after...  seems like a waste to have such a high caliber fight not even get broadcast on TV, let alone a pay per view, especially with all the griping about what a week card UFC 138 is from both sides of the pond.

coreymb on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:08 pm ET
From the start there was talk of having only one fight for the most part. Dana said depending on time that we could maybe see two fights. We have to remember that the UFC/FOX contract doesn't technically start until 2012. This card is just a teaser. This card was never supposed to be a full live card, ever. It's going to spike major interest and it's leading into boxing as well. Now boxing fans that traditionally don't watch mma, might just want to tune in to see what all the hype is about-and they still get to see their PPV. Pretty smart all around.

Dos Santos and Velasquez will end in thirty seconds so we will get to see this fight on Fox guaranteed....

Stockton_209 on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:10 pm ET
See what fight?

PoundCake on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:16 pm ET
Read the beginning of the article....

Stockton_209 on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:20 pm ET
Did you read the article? I think the point of it is that even if it does end in 30 seconds we are not seeing Bendo/Guida on FOX.

coreymb on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:29 pm ET
Yep. If the fight does end early, we are going to hear a lot about Overeem/Lesnar on top of a ton of commercials.

imroycegracie on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:10 pm ET
Im going! First live UFC, pretty pumped. The two best HWs on the planet fighting for the strap...and its JDS for the win!

UFCisSHADY on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:13 pm ET
Smart move.

mommasmuffin on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:14 pm ET
Crazy, just crazy they are not showing Henderson vs Guida.   Seems kind of half a$$ to me but that's just my opinion.  Looking forward to seeing Dos Santos and Cain fighting and I'd say this turns out to be the best main event of the year.

PoundCake on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:15 pm ET
Read the beginning of the article

mommasmuffin on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:19 pm ET
I love pound cake, used to eat it with my ranger pudding.  Anyway, I did read the article...what I mean was not showing it "televised".  I'll watch it regardless, I would just rather watch it on my television.

mmablaster on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:20 pm ET
Dumb move. Have the Velasquez v. Santos as the only featured match-up. But, if you have a couple quick finishes, put them on. That's a teaser. That's what the casual fans want to see. UFC has the capability to put them on the broadcast.

baroom on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:22 pm ET
Pretty STUPID on ZUFFA's part.  Being the first UFC on FOX they should have had at least one prelim.  They have been making dumb mistakes recently

WeAreLegion2012 on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:25 pm ET
Lame. First card on Fox should of been 4-5 block buster fights. This **** is stupid. Free or not it's stupid. See i can complain because all MMA is free if you want it to be. So since it's all free, then you can complain. Because you're technically not gettin a deal.

ThePsycho on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:31 pm ET
Stop complaining. This is not part of the four big cards on FOx starting next year. When I'd the last time you or anyone else have seen a free HW title fight?!? I rest my case.

WeAreLegion2012 on Nov 02, 2011 at 7:02 pm ET
Anyone can see free fights. Just need the internet.

tkidd91 on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:33 pm ET
BS

ironman316 on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:35 pm ET
I know this is a teaser and all, but I can't help but wonder what will happen if this backfires on the UFC.

coreymb on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:40 pm ET
Why would it backfire? Realistically, there will be 40 minutes of air time. That will not be hard to fill. What would backfire even more is airing more fights. UFC isn't targeting you or I. They are targeting people that have never seen mma before or have casually watched it. UFC does not want to compete with the Manny/Marquez card. They would simply lose. Let's not forget that the Hispanic market will account for a huge chunk of the PPV buys. Many of those fans may just tune in for free(before the boxing PPV) to check out Cain v Junior as well in support of Cain. I mean, the commercials have been all over the football games on Sunday, so the hype is out there. Now imagine, UFC going head to head with that PPV. How many of those people do you honestly think are going to check out Cain v Junior over watch the PPV? Sure, they could always DVR, but what UFC is doing is still the best plan by leading into a huge boxing PPV.

KaliRudeBoy on Nov 02, 2011 at 11:34 pm ET
+1000

Thanks for the intelligence.  You would hope that people would think more before the post, because, unlike speaking, it takes more effort to type.  Alas, it is not so.

There is nothing to complain about here, its a test run and I am super excited for this fight, and am glad all the hardcore fans can still stream the undercard like always.  From your points, it is easy to see why it is set up this way, perfect way to capitalize on a new fanbase that is extremely hardcore and loyal to the fight game...with this fight I don't think it will be hard to convert a lot of mexicans/hispanics into fans, or a lot of sports fans into fans for that matter.

rb311417 on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:41 pm ET
Really looking forward to this card. My wife texted me that there's a surprise party for her best friend that night and my response was "That's the night of the UFC on Fox". She quickly absolved me from going lol. I want to watch it live, especially the Cain-JDS fight to contribute to the ratings for the show.

OSP on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:43 pm ET
The short-sightedness of the MMA community never ceases to amaze me...

The UFC has a plan with this... and it doesn't involve any of us or any casual fans for that matter... it's about NEW EYES... people who wouldn't know the difference between Anderson Silva, GSP, or Brock Lesnar...  The people who can't pronounce 'ju jitsu' and don't know what 'MMA' stands for AND probably couldn't figure it out if you show them "MMA" right next to "mixed martial arts"...  The people who know the UFC is fighting, but who think the toughest kid from their neighborhood growing up could probably 'beat all their a$$es'...

This is a teaser, a practice run if you will...  The Fox contract starts in 2012...  this is going to be in 2011.  Of course they want to put their best foot forward, but it's not about showing 5 amazing fights or captivating an audience for 4 hours...  It's about giving the public a little info, a little history, and a little taste of what this sport's all about.  People don't become fans of ANYTHING by being subjected to it in one large dose...  it's the first small does that makes you interested in more and more and more...  Bands release singles to sell their albums...  Studios release trailers to sell their movies...  You didn't learn to love pizza by killing a whole pie - you started off with that ONE bite.

And that's what this is... ONE bite...  You and I will watch it and go, "man, I've seen/heard all this same stuff before"... the explanations, the breakdown of the rules, the recap of the fighters, etc, etc...  Someone flipping through the channels or coming off of watching college football all day is going to click through and go, "hmm... I remember seeing something about this...  it's better than 'Glee' I guess..." and then they're going get that little taste and *hopefully* be hungry enough afterwards to consider buying the next card or logging on to MMAJunkie.com for the first time.

mommasmuffin on Nov 02, 2011 at 4:37 pm ET
And people that come into a mma forum just to beat their chests and make themselves feel better with long drawn out posts never ceases to amaze me either.  Oh if we were only as smart as you.

OSP on Nov 02, 2011 at 4:43 pm ET
Man, if ONLY they were!

Then maybe we could engage in real debate instead of 'durka durka Dana's an idiot' and 'dee de dee the UFC doesn't know what they're doing'...

Maybe we'd all be better served by just ignoring rational thought and trying to make well thought, legitimate points.

mommasmuffin on Nov 02, 2011 at 5:09 pm ET

Yeah well, keep dreaming.  You're in the wrong place if you're looking for rational thought and legitimate points.  You damn sure aren't going to find those things here, maybe from a select few.  It's rare you find those things on any mma site for that matter.

I'd look around and follow "coreymb" if you are looking for rational thought and legitimate points.  He's usually on top of his game.  I'm sure there are a few more, he's just one example I can give you at the moment.

legsDontGoThatWay on Nov 02, 2011 at 5:58 pm ET
I don't know what you mean - there are loads of legitimate point on these boards

For example: "your an idiot because your ideas anger me and also because your an idiot"

blingdogg01 on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:46 pm ET
At least if they want to just air the Velasquez/JDS fight and nothing else, then they could just schedule that fight to be the only one for this event. It's stupid to attach all the other great fights to this card when they won't be aired on TV. All the UFC had to do was schedule the remaining fights on a separate card on another night. I really hate this because I was really looking forward to the other fights, especially Bendo/Guida which I want to see even more than JDS/Velasquez.

battery on Nov 02, 2011 at 3:55 pm ET
well, it WAS a good opportunity to reach a new audience. sheer stupidity by decision makers.

ronnyRAGE on Nov 02, 2011 at 4:00 pm ET
Very stupid desesion by FOX and the UFC  I hope JDS knocks Cain Brown Pride by 1st rd KO then they can have Rogaine and Goldielock talk about there desire to have a fearsome foursome with bj penn and eddie bravo

ronnyRAGE on Nov 02, 2011 at 4:03 pm ET
The Face Book streams are always slow I'm not a fan of this

mommasmuffin on Nov 02, 2011 at 4:34 pm ET
+1   The streams are too slow.

OSP on Nov 02, 2011 at 4:51 pm ET
Maybe I've just had really good luck then...  they've been bad in the past, but the last couple have been awesome for me...

CurbStompTrolls on Nov 02, 2011 at 11:05 pm ET

Yeah the last one ran super smooth for me. And I hardly have the best internet connection. However be warned if I watch the fights on FB they will suck, happens everytime I watch them, and when I don't they are usually pretty good.

KaliRudeBoy on Nov 02, 2011 at 11:35 pm ET
then go to fox.com.  I have not had a problem with the fb streams since the very first one.  Since then, it has been smooth sailing.

Staffdog on Nov 02, 2011 at 4:03 pm ET
A real waste of the FOX airing, Cain will most likely hump the 25 mins away.

OSP on Nov 02, 2011 at 4:23 pm ET
Yeah right, Troll.

Cain is 9-0 with one decision, one KO, and seven TKO's.  And that decision was anything but a humpfest.

JDS is 13-1 with two deicisons, seven TKO's, and three submissions...  And those decisions were brutal a$$ whoopin's that would have killed most men and even some large wild game...

There is NO way this could possibly be a boring fight.

legsDontGoThatWay on Nov 02, 2011 at 5:49 pm ET
lol large wild game

"There is NO way this could possibly be a boring fight"

and therefore since it is MMA, it will be

fedquo on Nov 02, 2011 at 4:11 pm ET
This is a very odd arrangement. So if its a 10 sec fight then it will be on for 10 minutes, including pre and post fight analysis?

gorththeiv on Nov 02, 2011 at 4:14 pm ET
I agree, it is odd. The reasoning behind this is because FOX sucks ba11s. Rupert Murdoch is a pr!ck and the more commercials they can show in that hour the better! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

GroveStud on Nov 02, 2011 at 4:22 pm ET
Doesn't matter to me really because I planned on watching all the prelims live anyway.  BUT, it sucks for Bendo and Guida.  The only reason they wanted to fight on this show was because of the possibility of their fight airing on FOX if the main fight was short.  Now they won't get jack for sponsor money and it'll be hard to build this as a #1 contenders fight if it's only aired online.  Those two guys are the real losers.

KaliRudeBoy on Nov 02, 2011 at 11:36 pm ET
I do agree that they may be getting a bit of a raw deal, but if the title fight is short, highlights of their fight most likely will be shown, though most of the air time will be promoting upcoming bouts/cards.

davesopinion on Nov 02, 2011 at 4:48 pm ET
What a dumb move!!  Guida vs. Bendo is going to be explosive (even more than Cain/JDS) and would definitely get more people interested in MMA!!  I wouldn't be surprised if this was changed right before airing.  I have to say it again, what a DUMB move!!

BorG on Nov 02, 2011 at 4:57 pm ET
its Velasquez vs Dos Santos,,,,,not Tyson vs Holyfield,,,,non mma fans have no idea who these guys are,,,they arent gonna flock to the tv to see this fight. Ratings will be no more than a ppv,,,pffft

Seems Facebook has a better deal with the UFC than Fox!!

footballkickjuiwes on Nov 02, 2011 at 5:22 pm ET
Wow.. a HW title fight where both guys are 7-0... sweet!

What ever happened to days when guys that were 2-1 got title shots? the days where you had to beat a nobody, lose to Mir and beat Herring to get a title shot... I miss those good old days when legitimate contenders faught for the belt, the days when guys would wail at the champ for 2+ minutes and not get a stoppage.. The Great Ole' DAYS!!!

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO YOU... Ultimate Fighting Circus!? What has become of you, letting guys that both 7-0 fight for the belt, I miss the cherry picking!! (sarcasm)

If you read all the articles in the past few months they have answered all your questions, why just 1 hour? because its only a teaser for future events, why only 1 fight? because its a teaser for future events, is this the start of a trend? no, because its...i really dont have to go on, learn to read, grow up and be happy about what the UFC is giving you for FREE, not what you cant see on fox, get to a damn computer and watch on facebook not that hard.

Sneezeburger on Nov 02, 2011 at 8:28 pm ET
Does anyone know what time Fox will broadcast the main event?
Here's the way I see the time being filled:
Cue Music...Goldberg opens with a bluster while Rogan tilts his head and looks on...Rogan tells us this will be the fight of the century... Cue closeups of each fighter and five minute interviews with each fighter telling us how it will be impossible for him to lose...Break to live shots of each fighter having their hands wrapped and then shadow boxing while their team looks on as fighter mugs for the camera...break to commercial...Open with crowd shots with high testosterone males making the "hang loose" sign and shouting "Woooooo!" into the camera...House lights darken and then light up as fighter number one gets ready to enter among security and team members all prominently displaying Condom Depot logos on t-shirt...Fighter embraces team while Stitch greases up fighter and then  climbs into the octagon...Buffer tells us "It's Time" and Spins to introduce the fighters. Herb Dean asks if they are ready and the fight begins...We will hear Rogan and Goldie use "Nice knee and Good Knee" 15 times before a punch lands and Rogan will then say "he hurt him Mike...Goldberg will then shout out "It is all over!" Rogan will enter the Octagon and grab the victorious fighter and ask that he must really be happy with his performance and talk us through the video. Rogan will then congratulate the fighter and tell us that we all look forward to seeing him in the octagon again. Cue the 15th Bud Light commercial and fade to black

KaliRudeBoy on Nov 02, 2011 at 11:39 pm ET
Actually, Fox has their own people for this broadcast.  No Rogan and Goldie as far as I understand it.  Read some of the earlier stories on junkie and they will fill you in.  John Anik (I believe that is right) and an unnamed current/former UFC fighter will be doing the play by play.  Whole new format, it will be interesting to see how it flows, or doesn't.  But this is a test run.
