9th anniversary of the beginning of NATO bombing of Serbia was commemorated in Air Force Command in Zemun. On that occasion, Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac met with SAF airmen who were engaged during NATO bombing. After this meeting, the commemorative wreaths were laid on the memorial plaque in honour of air men killed during NATO aggression were laid by MoD and SAF delegations made up of Minister Sutanovac, State Secretary Igor Jovicic, Major General Dragan Kolundzija and Dragan Katanic, as well as Air Force Command delegation with Col. Nebojsa Djukanovic, Co. Sreto Malinovic and Col. Milos Radisavcevic in this delegation.
“Today we are here to mark 9 years since NATO commenced its 78 day bombing of our country, which decision remains as one of the most gruesome in modern history of NATO and Serbia. Today we are here to honour those who were he first on the frontline and had the misfortune to get killed. The events 9 years ago should serve us as a lesson for the future time when we will have to be politically wiser, and not just to think in terms of armed forces. It is better to negotiate for 100 years than to wage a single war,” Sutanovac said. Reminding the media that the Serbian Parliament had adopted the decision of military neutrality, Minister stated that this framework was sufficient for the cooperation of our country with the alliance, and referred Austria as an EU member state with full participation in PfP even though it is not a member of NATO.
During his meeting with the pilots who carries out their tasks back in 1999, Sutanovac said he wanted to meet with them on this one of the saddest days in our recent history, when both sides showed lack of understanding.
”The state policy which led to a conflict with NATO demonstrated we did not know how to manage a crisis in a way we do that today, when we are still facing a lot of challenges. I am pleased with SAF’s attitude so far, and as a member of the Government that we can safely say that SAF are under complete democratic control now, and is exerting less influence on political situation than it was the case nine years ago. This shows that SAF had shown maturity, which they gained in experience during 1999.”
Colonel Nebojša Ðukanoviæ, who was the commander of 127th fighter aviation escadrille and who flew MiG-29 said that in 1999 after extensive and serious preparations air force of Yugoslavia faced the opponent with the best resources it had then-MiG-29 air crafts. Out of 15 planes, 6 were soon destroyed in aerial combat, while one heavily damaged planes managed to land on Nis air base.Anotehr four air crafts were destroyed while still on the runway. Two pilots Major Zoran Radosavljeviæ and Col. Milenko Pavloviæ did not manage to eject and they died defending the skies over Serbia. Today we have 5 MiG-2 planes who are undergoing repair at the moment in order to extend their life cycle. Recently, on 15 February, the Day of SAF Col. Djukanovic flew the first plane which had been repaired.
Today LTG Ponos, Chief of SAF GS, Zoran Jeftiæ, State Secreatry,Gorica Mojoviæ the representative of Belgrade laid commemorative wreaths and flowers in front of «Dr Dragiša Mišoviæ» hospital when seven soldiers then serving military duty lost their lives, and on which occasion the whole hospital complex suffered great damage.
