International Antarctic tourism association

The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators was established in 1991. It is a voluntary group which advocates and promotes safe and environmentally responsible private-sector travel to the Antarctic. An IAATO objective is "to create a corps of ambassadors for the continued protection of Antarctica by offering the opportunity to experience the continent first hand." IAATO by-laws govern members' activities. The organisation supports the principles of the Antarctic Treaty, and provides statistics on Antarctic travel to inform Antarctic Treaty governments' decisions on tourism management.

IAATO was founded by 7 companies. Now it has 93 members. For more information on the international Antarctic tourism market and self-regulatory steps which operators have taken to achieve environmentally responsible travel to the Antarctic, visit the IAATO website: www.iaato.org
