Collapse Under The Empire [Shoulders & Giants]

Chris Burda and Martin Grimm, of Hamburg, are the founders of the instrumental music project Collapse Under The Empire. In a short period of time, international magazines such as Q- Magazine, Rocksound, and Clash took notice of the band and proved themselves excited about the cinematic sound of their first two albums.

At the beginning of the year they were represented on the legendary Emo Diaries compilation by the US label Deep Elm, among other things. They also composed the soundtrack for the short film Sharks don’t Cry for the Sharkproject, an organization which fights at the front against the eradication of sharks.

After their psychadelic mini album The Sirens Sound, which appeared last year, and the split EP Black Moon Empire, released with the Russian band Mooncake, Collapse Under The Empire released the first part of the double album Shoulders & Giants on October 21st 2011, which in Europe will appear under the label Sister Jack/ Cargo Records. The second part, Sacrifice & Isolation, will appear one year later.

TSS: "Shoulders & Giants".

3 weeks to go for this title to hit its official release date and I don’t know if anyone had a chance to hear this new album yet but I had and I mean [ Loud And Clear ]. “Shoulders & Giants” isn’t the ordinary post-rock sound we know of. The German based duo Chris and Martin has taken a different turn combining EPIC guitars with chilled electronic moments and a share cut of sad mood. While one may experience an oppressing and melancholic vibe “Shoulders & Giants” blended elements also comes together delightfully cheerful and bright.

Over the past years C.U.T.E prominent works of creating sound that is not just rhythmic and alarming but sound’s that literally tells a story, music that usually paint pictures in one’s mind and keys ~ rhythms that are equally mood shifting in an epic grandeur carrying along a unique signature of their own delicacy to get you carried away on bliss journey.

The tricky and most notably part about C.U.T.E is that year by year, release after releases the band progress never seems to reach an end. We’ve made the following statement on almost all C.U.T.E releases. “This is C.U.T.E best title so far”. I mean we’ve said it on [ Systembreakdown ] and when [ Find A Place To Be Safe ] hit the market we said the same thing. Again when [ The Sirens Sound ] was released many statement can found and read that [ The Sirens Sound ] is by far “C.U.T.E.” best ever released title. [ Black Moon Empire ] came out just about a month ago and we’ve hold on to that very same statement. And now... on “Shoulders & Giants” yet again we concede the very same line, and yes it is true “Shoulders & Giants” is C.U.T.E most provoking work to date.

This simply goes to show the band persistence and dedication in creating sound that excel all expectations. [ C.U.T.E ] in a nutshell has really matured and grown on us over the last few year and on “Shoulders & Giants” one can expect nothing but fully bloomed sound staring at you and ready to be embraced. Personally if I were to asked to describe “Shoulders & Giants” in four words, it will go something like this... “Shoulders & Giants” [ TOTALLY RULE BEYOND POST-ROCK ].

Jordi Clapés-Bot [ Les Vagues ]

[ CherylSantamaria.COM ] - Instrumental music is like reading a book, whereas a song that relies on lyrics is more like watching a film. While every bit as masterful as the instrumental (and book) can be, films and lyrics have a greater propensity to tell the audience how it should be feeling, leaving less room for interpretation.

The reason I bring this up is because I’d like to introduce you to Jordi Clapés-Bot, a truly gifted instrumental musician from Berlin, Germany. Rich textured and image-driven, his music exemplifies a solid grasp of composition and technical skill. The absence of lyrics allows the listener’s mind to wander toward images of foggy, after-hours nights on the Champs-Élysées, the changing leaves of fall or a barn crushing under the weight of the snow. The quiet, every day moments that make life richer are magnified and immortalized here, creating a truly wonderful listening experience.

“[Classical composers] gave me the stylistic freedom I needed to be inspired,” Jordi tells me. ”I have very poor influences in mordern music. Yann Tiersen is one of my favourite artists [as well as] Nyman.” Non-musical influences are rooted in poetry, particularly Proust, as well as the relation between numbers and proportions.

Despite years of classical training, Jordi only began to craft his signature sound in 2009. Described as a blending of Bach, Beethoven and Debussy with electric guitars and post-rock sounds, the first Jordi Clapés-Bot EP was released in 2010.

I cannot express to you the value of Jordi’s music. I urge you to listen and share with your friends. Jordi will be on tour in Spain next month, with anticipated stops in Greece as well as other major European cities. Visit Jordi’s official website to get tour details.

[ LES VAGUES ] This is the first track of the upcoming album by Jordi Clapés-Bot entitle "Les Vagues". This new EP combines certain particular point of view from the artist side and influences of French impressionist composers can be heard through the album.

Finally the last track of the new EP is now on BandCamp. Definitely a long wait to the completion on the EP itself but TOTALLY WORTHY. All tracks on [ Les Vagues ] reflects purely upon nature such as the sea, the waves, the wind, the forest and basically nature as it's predominant theme with strong elements of ambient and neo-classical piano to accompany the endless flaw.

The subtleness and warmth gathered on this three piece EP most certainly characterize this EP as one of JC-Bot BEST work to date. Ambient-based piano sound keeping a fine tune on the classical end of music. Les Vagues = My Favourite Title Of JC-Bot. ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS. Check out the last track guys [ Les Vagues III ]. Well check out the entire EP for that matter.

Marionette ID [ Alluvion ]

MARIONETTE ID RELEASE THEIR NEW ALBUM “ALLUVION” ON FLUTTERY RECORDS:One of the most extraordinary bands in Hungary, Marionette ID release a new album.

Marionette ID is a Hungarian experimental/post-rock band founded in 2008. After expanding to a greater audience, they played several European tours in 2010 and 2011. The bands appearance on many blogs, music websites made the label curious about the band and they have signed a recording agreement with Fluttery Records.

The label started re-issuing their debut self-relase album “Emptiness Will Change Your Mind” in September 2010. The band and album received many good reviews. On a review on Sound As Language, the band received this comment “Subtle melodies are countered by moody instrumental passages and soothing vocals. Marionette ID possess an emotional weight and depth that truly set the band apart. This is post-hardcore at its most melodic and structured. Marionette ID are practicing a precision few bands dare to. If you are willing to give Emptiness Will Change Your Mind some time to grow, you will be richly rewarded.”

C.W.Ross said “It hard to pin down the style of music played by the band because it changes depending on what song or even what part of a song you’re listening to at that particular time. You’ll hear everything from Indie and modern rock to post rock, progressive and even jam band elements in the eight songs that make up ‘Emptiness Will Change Your Mind’ and he gave 8.25/10 to the album. Blues Bunny made the comment “An interesting album, therefore, that would have appeal for those who like melody in their rock music or for those who seek to go further than indie rock snack food.”

Between Days [ All The Water; It Flows Out To Sea ]

Between Days is an indie/ambient/rock project from Doylestown, Pennsylvania. After spending two years writing and slowly recording material, on October 4th, 2011 Between Days' debut album "All The Water; It Flows Out To Sea" was released on Lillian Records. It is available for pay what you want (but ultimately free) download via bandcamp. A plan is in motion to press the debut record on vinyl is in pipeline but it might take some time.

All The Water; It Flows Out To Sea was written by Kenny Miller starting in September of 2009 and ending in May of 2011. It was recorded by Adam Laub of Lillian Records from September of 2010 until September of 2011. Bobby Iacano mastered the album at Gradwell House in New Jersey. All artwork for the album was painted by Colin Frangicetto. Finally, the design and layout work was completed by Bren King.

Though Between Days is a one person project it would not function as a preforming band, nor would it sound the way it does today, without the help of the following people:

6LA8 [ In The Land Of Dreams ]

We are 6LA8, an experimental/post-rock band coming from Karachi, Pakistan. This will be our 3rd full album release (all songs will be free to download) and we hope you will review our album in advance so that we can get constructive feedback as well some fanbase for our music. Unsurprsiginly, its hard to find people who like to listen to experimental songs in Pakistan.

[ This Is Not A Conceptual Album ] is our 3rd album, totalling around 90min. There is a range of influences, going from jazz to electronic to ambient, post rock and so on. We can't name any one without going into a full list of names, so let our music decide it for you.

Approximately three weeks after [ This Is Not A Conceptual Album ] “6LA8” make their return with yet another drone experimental release conveniently titled [ The Drone Collective ]. Half way through the year and the absurdly prolific moniker “6LA8” is already on their 3rd LP’s this year alone. Let’s face it here... it's another incredible step forward for the duo especially considering the depth of the final outcome itself.

Slightly drifted apart from the experimental aspect of [ This Is Not A Conceptual Album ] The Drone Collective in its entire entity lead [ Taimur Mazhar Sheikh ] and [ Omer Asim ] in standard to [ Methadrone ] and [ Nadja / A. Baker ] territories where guitar tones are amplitude to its largeness and camouflaging songs in endless and epic swirling loops.

Although [ The Drone Collective ] is set in its chronological order still... having heard the album dozens of times over the course of a week the release as a whole do not pertains a point of entry or exit. One can literally hit play from the very beginning of the album or start at the middle, the bottom line is every single track on this title simply sound like an opening of something very big and that’s about to lead somewhere deep and profound.

Given the tight and overcrowded industry [ 6LA8 ] has clearly managed to bring an expansion to the world of drone. [ The Drone Collective ] is most certainly an album to simply chill with. Let’s not go far guys... take [ Those Are My Bombs You're Talking About! ] or [ Sir, I Had No Need For That Hypothesis ], it’s equally intense and dark with heavy textures that brings out the raw and muscular side of the project while pieces like [ Our Undivided Attention To Matters of Divine Importance ] and [ “Part 2” We Would Still Need Reason in Heaven ] comfortably brings an overwhelming background music which is so intrusive that it's almost impossible to focus entirely on, but somehow between sequences the sound manipulates everything in your natural surroundings to make it glows and feel ultra-light.

For those who are already heavily into [ 6LA8 ] recordings, this edit will probably come as a huge surprise, I mean given the last album was just three weeks ago, GOOD SURPRISE THOUGH. But for those who are briefly involved in [ 6LA8 ] materials or who previously only took a mere glance at them, well... now is the time to get fully acquainted.

Most of [ 6LA8 ] albums have an overarching vague concept around them, that somehow makes sense but only because we mentioned it. The same applies here, but we hope it resonates a bit more now because of the hazy music. There are some incidents in life which impact you, powerfully. They shatter you, and you realize that something that seemed so inconsequential to you at one time could have such a devastating outcome in your own life, and it feels like you have been cheated.

And you feel like you just want to get away from it, as if distracting yourself could help you with the condition you are in. You turn your focus to other things in life, maybe hobbies like reading, writing, making music, actively participating in groups or socializing. Or, if things get real bad, praying. But it just creeps in, in every thought you're thinking. In every conversation you're having.

"In the Land of Dreams" attempts to portray that blanket of comfort and false consolations that we have, the denial and distractions that we can maintain, which keeps us sane for the most part. There are occasional glimpses of 'What the fuck am I doing?', the fact that time is running out and you should do something useful, but instead only the feeling of helplessness and worthlessness settle in.

It is a Long (nearly 2 hours), simple and vague album, hidden behind dialogues on various tiring topics. It has music that has no energy left on its own, but is soft enough to dissolve in your head and swim in the puddle (or chasm) of thoughts that you may have, if you let it. But to a distracted mind, ironically, it is mere elevator music.

Paper Armies / Desert Of Hiatus [ SPLIT ]

paper armies creates expanding musical textures through the use of guitar, piano and voice. These three elements are combined in unique ways where the source material is often unrecognizable, and the melody is often inferred by the listener.

The result is an incredibly personal sound, encouraging self reflection and creating a lasting emotional impact. In terms of genre, paper armies could be described as a blend of ambient, shoegaze and post-rock elements, though many of his largest influences come from the minimal and impressionist movements of classical music.

Uniform Motion [ One Frame Per Second ]

As with most biographies, this story begins with the utterances of hypnotic phrases being repeated over, and over, and over, again; ricocheting through a developing sensitive mind; with the whispering of bitter-sweet music before the age of reason. The words, the sounds and the looks that a young mind has processed cannot be erased. They can only be stored in different places. Under the influence of Steven Heller’s Monsters and Magical Sticks, the concept of Uniform Motion sees the light.

The principle is that we go through life in a continual straight line and that the trajectory we are on will never change unless something, or someone, hits us. After years and years of selectively storing data and cruising down the highway of life (and a quick stint with Angle -We’ll Pick Up the Pieces Next Time, 2006), Andrew Richards picks up an old battered guitar. Two of the strings were missing, but that’s how that guitar was meant to me, so she would stay that way.

The 4-string guitar is the backbone of Uniform Motion’s music. Multiplied, duplicated, interlaced, and dissonant – as if there were different personalities trying to jump out of it. The vocals follow the same pattern - when strummed guitar strings become strings of words, or soft utterances that give substance to a subconscious idea. The beating of African percussion can be heard in the background, emanating from an urban soundscape, evoking a primitive nature, an imaginary journey, a calm floating sensation. The guitars hold this all together.

================================================================== This is Uniform Motion’s third studio album. Recorded in a sound engineering school in Paris, mixed and mastered by the band, however, the production of this album is of little importance, more importantly: One Frame Per Second is an adventure. The Story of Little Knight, starting off in life with the kind perils one would expect of a young knight. He gets attacked by a giant, his childhood sweetheart, the Princess, gets kidnapped and he must face his biggest fears in order to save her.

One Frame Per Second details all the hazards the Little Knight faces. The Little Knight begins his journey by going back in time, (not literally of course, that would be impossible!) remembering the first encounter with his noble lady, reminded of how they used to pick apples together and play tricks on wizards at Magic School by placing buckets of sludge above the door.

Nostalgia encourages him to go back to his roots and he reminisces about the innocence of childhood, walking the streets he grew up on, reliving the events that forged his character. This provides him with the strength he needs to embark on his quest. He sets sail and quickly finds the Forty-Foot man who stole his beloved living a cozy life on an island nearby. As most of you probably know, fighting a man 7 times taller than you is not an easy task. He gets beaten up of course but vows to never give up and swears he we will find a way to free the Princess.

The islanders, who have been oppressed by the giant for centuries, are so impressed by the bravery of the young lad that they start to follow him wherever he goes, treating him like a messiah. We’re all used to seeing crowds of people standing, and staring, and acting silly, but when they follow you around like idiots, you have to do something about it! So he flees to the nearby mountains and camps there for a while.

He comes across the devil during his stay, who offers him weapons and magical power so he can defeat the giant, in exchange for his soul of course. Selling one’s soul to the devil for a sword and some magic beans is a small price to pay for a princess, he thinks, so he swiftly shakes on it. He returns to the Island to find the giant in chains. The islanders, so inspired by the courage of the Little Knight, worked together to defeat the tall ogre during the Knight’s absence.

The Little Knight is obviously a little pissed off about this. He figures that the devil had probably been aware of this fact when he swapped the weapons and magic for his soul. Bloody devils, you can’t trust any of them! To add insult to injury, he learns that the Princess had been freed by the giant long before the islanders had defeated him. It appears that he had grown tired of her and put her on a boat, blindfolded, a few days before the young knight had arrived on the island and confronted the giant for the first time. Why on earth did that rude giant not say so in the first place?

Thinking to himself the magic may not be wasted, the Little Knight places the sword in the ground and uses the magic to ensure it doesn’t budge. He attaches some rope to it, and to himself, and magically flies off the find the Princess. A few days later, the rope drops to the ground, as if it had been cut at the other end. The islanders pull on the rope for days, until the end of it reaches them. Attached to the other end of the rope, they find a small bottle. In the bottle, they find a small box. In the small box they find a note. In the note, they find some words.

Lands [ Emperor ]

LANDS are a Post Rock/Metal band, formed late Autumn 2010 in "Reigate, Surrey UK". Following the same concept of their 1st 2010 album "Subtitles" while filtering all the core elements of metal-core and post-hardcore through a lens of aggressive and charismatic build up [ Lands ] brings their second album [ Emperor ]. To be released on the 22nd of October 2011 the album is up on BandCamp in its full entity and will be release as free downloads.

Strange Mangers [Strange Mangers ]

Mellow-core mood-setters with a gift for lyricism... while densely textured and stunningly smooth on the instruments [ Strange Mangers ] remain constant in the center of the ever-growing and -shifting post-rock / math-rock storm. The stuttering tones and intertwining melodies are all there, but instead of being heavy and alienating [ Strange Mangers ] manage to consistently evoke things that resemble…be prepare for it. Actual human thoughts and feelings! So that right there is more than [ Tangled Thoughts Of Leaving ] could ever say for themselves.

Admittedly more direct than [ Tortoise ] and less concrète than [ Gastr Del Sol ] Strange Mangers familiarise themselves with such concepts that can only be captured by calculated riffs and unequal pattern. Their music’s indicates direct emotions and feelings with the explicitness of lyrics as a primary / secondary concern.

This Self Title gathered some distorted tunes and powerful drumming, but the overwhelming mood is bittersweet and mournful. [ Strange Mangers ] does their part to create a bunch of songs that are “dense” but still warm and genuine-sounding. This album truly standout in the category of math-rock / mellow-core math and deserves excessive merit. The entire semi-instrumental setup with lush flaw and warm but yet eerie vocals that enters the perfect sequence.

To Destroy A City [ To Destroy A City ]

Chicago-based [ To Destroy A City ] was formed in the summer of 2010 with the goal of merging the collective inspiration of many genres and styles of sound into unified, wholly emotive, compositional pieces. Michael Marshall [ guitar ] Jeff Anderson [ guitar/keyboards ] and Andrew Welch [ drums/synths/programming ]

started quickly, writing the core of 5 of the 8 tracks on their self-titled debut within the first 2 months of their existence. Earth-shaking personal events followed, uniting the group even further and fueling the group’s emotional and creative output. In the frigid winter of 2011 To Destroy A City began recording what would become their debut at their north-suburban recording studio.

Soon the cold gave way to new life as they created an album ripe with slow-burning ambience, pulsating rhythms, and soaring leads. Often building on a theme, the album weaves together melodic passages to create compositions trance-inducing in their simplicity, yet layered with meaning. At times dark and mournful, at others filled with hope, To Destroy A City’s debut serves as an introduction to a band seeking to push themselves into an entirely new world of emotion through sound.

Their self-titled debut will be released 9.27.2011. Opening with the droning piano and dreamlike soundscape of Metaphor, the album takes the listener through highs and lows, pounding beats, and ethereal ambience, evoking influences such as The Appleseed Cast, Nine Inch Nails, Hammock, and Boards of Canada.

NOTE: [ To Destroy A City ] is the same man behind [ 1908 ]. I'm just dedicating a page for this project on its own simply because the sound is by far way different and exquisite. EVERYONE SHOULD GET THIS.
