Know it’s a bit too early to start growing but too stubborn to stay out of the garden? Then this workshop is for you. We’ll talk about seed starting, frost protection, soil prep, raised bed building, and more. We’ll help you make that early bird garden as productive as possible!

Learn how to plant and grow your own food in a variety of containers. We will discuss how to grow in containers, things to lookout for, watering issues, fertilizing, general care as well as the varieties of plants that thrive best in containers.

2011 Spring Kickoff

Join Hungry Mother and Full Circle Compost as we celebrate the beginning of spring and the start of the 2011 gardening season! The day will feature four workshops throughout the day, music, food, kids activities, and local vendors from the Carson Valley region. More details on what promises to be a fun and educational day forthcoming!

Companion Planting & Native Landscaping (20 attended)

Do you want to help the bees? Provide habitat for wildlife? Landscape with plants that flourish in your microclimate? Native plants can be the answer. Ed Kleiner of Comstock Seed will talk about the ecological importance of planting native drought tolerant species and best practices for establishing a native plant garden. http://www.comstockseed.com. You will also learn from Hungry Mother about how to use companion planting to attract birds, bees, and butterflies and to control those undesirable pests.

Backyard Farmers Association Meeting at the N. NV Correctional Facility – June 7 at 6pm

With this new opportunity to create a community venture in local food production, our primary goal is to generate excitement for a strong local food network in the Carson Valley – Reno region and support your growing efforts.  Tour of Hungry Mother’s and Full Circle Compost’s operations at the Northern Nevada Correctional Facility.

Four-Season Gardening: Hoop House, High Tunnel or Greenhouse – June 25 at 10am (35 attended)

What’s the difference and which one do I want?! Thinking of buying a greenhouse or hoop house but have a lot of questions about it? This workshop will talk about the pros and cons of each and help you make the best decision for your available finances, space, and vegetable growing aspirations.

Edible flowers have long been called the “food of fairies.” Herbs and edible flowers often go hand in hand adding a magical touch to any meal. From salads with Pansies and Bachelor Buttons and Nastutium Butter to Rose Petal Crème Brulee and Lavender Mint Lemonade, we will be sampling a variety of delicious “edibles” perfect for all the little “fairies” in your life. So skip breakfast and come learn some new items to add to your favorite dishes!

Great Basin Food Coop Tour of Prison Farm – August 13 (20 attended)

Your Garden Harvest in a Jar (20 attended) – August 27

Join this wonderful canning class where you will sample some pre-canned delicacies and learn everything you need to know to start canning safely and confidently. Sample some spicy peach salsa, roasted pepper ketchup, radish relish, salsa verde, roasted tomato sauce, oven-dried tomatoes and pickled beets with cumin and cloves.
