The draw for the XX Women’s World Championship (2 to 18 December 2011) will be held on 2 July 2011 – the closing day of the Women’s Pan-American Championship, taking place in Sao Bernardo do Campo in Brazil. The IHF Commission of Organising and Competition (COC) now published the seeding list for the draw, which will be conducted by Leon Kalin, President of the COC, at 21.00 (local time).

24 teams will go for gold in Brazil. The preliminary round will be played in four groups with six teams each. The four best-ranked teams of each group qualify for the eighth-finals, the other eight teams will meet in the President’s Cup. The eighth-finals are followed by the quarter-finals, placement matches, semi-finals and finals.
The preliminary round will take place from 2 to 9 December, eighth-finals and the President’s Cup will follow on 11/12 December. Starting from the quarter-finals (14 December), all matches will be played in Sao Paolo: the semi-finals and placement matches on 16 December and the final, the bronze final and the placement matches on 18 December.

The World Champion will qualify directly for the Olympic Games 2012 in London. Generally speaking the teams ranked 2nd to 7th will qualify for the Olympic Qualification Tournaments (25 to 27 May 2012). The teams ranked 2nd to 4th are basically entitled to host one of the Olympic Qualification Tournaments. The World Champion will automatically qualify for the 2013 World Championship in Serbia.

The seeding list for the draw is based on the performance of the different continental representatives at the 2009 World Championship in China and the outcome from qualifications in the continents. The top seed in pot 1 is defending champion Russia.

Pot 2: Denmark, Kazakhstan (Asian champion), France, Montenegro
Pot 3: Netherlands, Croatia, Brazil (Organiser), Angola (African champion)
Pot 4: Korea, Germany, Tunisia, Pan-America 1 (qualifying on 1 July)
Pot 5: China, Spain, Côte d’Ivoire, Pan-America 2
Pot 6: Japan, Iceland, Pan-America 3, Australia (Oceania champion)

As 21participating teams out of 24 in total have already been established, the last three places will be allocated to the top-ranked teams of the Pan-American Championship, taking place in Sao Bernardo do Campo from 28 June to 2 July. In group A Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Cuba will compete. Argentina, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela will meet in group B. The three top-ranked teams except for host Brazil will book their tickets for the WCh.
