Most passport holders need visas to get into South Africa. Check with your local travel agent to determine if you need one. Upon arrival, you must be able to prove that you have enough money to support yourself during your stay. You must also have a valid return ticket.

If you're in the city itself, you'll find
walking about the easiest - and most pleasant - way to get around, especially owing to
Cape Town's generally year-round gorgeous weather, and the fact that finding parking in
"town" can be a tad frustrating!
Roaming the many curio and antique markets, or strolling through the city's oak-lined
Company Gardens, en route to the National Gallery or Natural History Museum, are popular
with both visitors and residents. For those with energy, or whose schedules are not too
hectic, Cape Town is best discovered by foot.
For exploring further afield - i.e. if the sun lures you to one of the city's beautiful,
natural beaches - hop onto a minibus taxi,
South Africa's most used, and most economical, means of public transport, travelling to
just about every area (and stopping just about anywhere, too!). The more conventional metropolitan bus service will also get you where
you need to be. Operating from the Grand Parade station, in the heart of the city, there
are sign-posted bus stops situated along all the key routes. Both will get you to the
lower cable station if Table Mountain is your destination!
In addition, an excellent rail network links
central Cape Town with the southern Peninsula and the Western Cape (timetables and tickets
available at Cape Town's centrally-located station - call 403 9080 or 0800 65 64 63 for
enquiries). One of the best ways to see the breathtaking sea views of False Bay on the way
to historic Simonstown is by train!
Taxi cabs are another option, and are
specially recommended at night. Although you can't hail a taxi New York-style on the
streets of Cape Town, they can be hired at taxi ranks or ordered by phone through one of
the many taxi companies. Not cheap, but definitely the safest bet, the average charge is
about R4.50 per km.
Alternately, hire a car if you'd prefer
greater independence. Healthy competition between car hire companies (local and
international) has ensured untold rewards from shopping around for the best deal. It's
sometimes also possible to return a car picked up in Cape Town in another city, or vice
versa. A valid driver's licence and minimum age of 21 or 25 are generally the only other
requirements.
Air Travel
Cape Town International Airport is approximately 17km from the city centre - about a 15 to
20 minutes' drive! More than a dozen international and seven local airlines fly arrive at
and depart from this busy airport day and night, seven days a week. Airport enquiries:
Tel. 934 0407.
Intercity Bus Services
Luxury bus services are available between Cape Town and most other cities in South Africa.
