ESPN.com preseason rank: No. 11So what did the racing geniuses at ESPN.com think of your favorite driver? Check out how writers Terry Blount, Ed Hinton, Ryan McGee, David Newton and Marty Smith as well as editors Joe Breeze and K. Lee Davis voted heading into the 2011 season. The Vote 2011 OutlookGreg Biffle doesn't hesitate when it comes to his expectations for 2011. "That is simple, to win the title," he said. "I want to win a bunch of races and win the title." At the age of 41 Biffle hopes to complete what no NASCAR driver has, to become the first to have a championship trophy in all three of the sport's top series. The Sprint Cup title is the only missing link, and he has a team capable of filling it. That this is a contract year for Biffle gives him even more incentive, although it's hard to imagine him leaving Roush Fenway Racing. If you want to know how competitive Biffle is, consider that only a minute after calling himself a "notorious planner" he was asked who would drive his car if he needed a backup to be with his wife when their first child is born in July. "Nobody," Biffle said. He paused and then added, "That's kind of weird to think about. You're so competitive, that's your deal. I haven't thought about it, seriously. Never even considered it. I don't have any children yet. There's a lot to be said for being there when your child is born. "But we can't control everything." Biffle has been one of the most consistent drivers over the past six seasons. He had an amazing 2005 season in which he won six races and finished tied for second behind champion Tony Stewart by only 35 points. He's won at least one race every season but 2009 since entering the Cup Series fulltime in 2003. "We all know you have to have the right luck [to win the title]," Biffle said. "You have to be very focused. You've got to have fast racecars, build good engines, be mentally and physically prepared under the worst conditions to come out being on top. "I feel like I have every single one of those things it's going to take to win the title this year." Biffle didn't have that luck a year ago. He appeared poised to win at Chicago before blowing an engine. He led the most laps in the second Michigan race before settling for fourth. He dominated at Texas with 224 laps led only to finish fifth. And then there was the Daytona 500, in which Biffle would have won had NASCAR not revised its rules to allow three attempts at a green-white-checkered finish. "I look at how we ran and us executing better with how good our equipment is now I think we can win six races," Biffle said confidently. "I really think we can win four. I really, really truly feel like we can win four races. And I felt that way in '05. "I feel as good about this year as I did in '05. I feel like I'm in good shape. I'm ready physically, mentally to drive the car. We got our program going really good last year." Odds of winning it all in 2011: 22-1. Remember, he won six races, led over 1,300 laps and finished second in points in 2005. Give him good stuff and he can succeed even at an age when most are on the downward turn. 2010 Review2010 Preseason Rank: 11 Two wins, 19 top-10s and a sixth-place finish in points was pretty good considering the struggles Roush Fenway Racing had as the organization to begin the season. Biffle showed what this team is capable of in the Chase with a win and five top-5s over the final 10 races, including three straight to finish the season. Take away poor finishes at California (engine) and Martinsville and he would have been in the mix at the end. Grade: B -- David Newton |
