Child abuse: We’re making the problem worse. Experts say America's approach to sex offenders only increases the likelihood that they will re-offend. by arte_misiain TrueReddit

Mainly because we have other options that are proven effective. All sorts of things have been tried already. Almost all the way to the Clockwork Orange level.

I am not against some experimentation, but psychedelics really vary according to the individual and I would be worried about doing more harm.

Offenders who completed the programmes had a recidivism rate of 5 per cent. In two control groups that did not receive treatment, rates were 21 per cent and 25 per cent, Wellington Stop manager Hamish Dixon said.

It's complicated, but our counties internal data found the recidivism rate at 3%.

A town creates its own department store: NY Times article about a community-owned department store as an alternative to Wal Mart/corporate chain stores. by ass_creditin TrueReddit

You can buy all the shares of Walmart that you want, but that won't open a store in your town of 5000. Chances are most of the people who chose that lifestyle, chose that over moving to a place where there is a walmart.

Maybe they are the same thing. The only difference I can see is that a HERF gun is directional and an EMP is uni-directional

The question is whether he was a pedophile before he started investigating it.

There are an inordinate amount of child molestations and sex crimes within the profession of Roman Catholic Priests.

Actually the numbers within the priesthood are similar to the numbers in society at large.

Actually recidivism for pedophilia is rather low for people who receive treatment for their problems. However they only go to counseling to stay out of jail.

Utility CEO on Solar: In “3 to 5 Years You’ll Be Able to Get Power Cheaper from the Roof of Your House Than From the Grid” by BlueRockin environment

[–]Moarbrains 2 points3 points ago*

Of course getting power delivered is more expensive. Maintaining the national grid is super expensive.

Wiki says transmission loses 7%, and the generators have to produce 10% more than demand. But I have heard that losses are even higher than that and would appreciate any information. I vaguely heard something on NPR the other day.

You are completely right, pharmaceutical companies are not known for inviting competition.

I personally hope there is a strong enough MMJ program to survive the entry of the larger players.

You counter that by making nano-eating nanos, then it is just an arms race to see who's nanos evolve fastest.

I would bet on humans, as we are nanos, humans and computers vs. just nanos.

Sriracha and Tapatio both have a few extra ingredients I am not fond of. Aardvark is missing the preservatives and xantham gum.

An Army Apart: The Widening Military-Civilian Gap by BlankVersein TrueReddit

This article completely misses the point.

It is a lack of faith in our leaders. Our wars are clearly no longer in defense of our nation. So what would inspire someone to join?

The only reasons left to join are the opportunities: travel, training, camaraderie and the odd chance of combat.

Except we are talking about a decision to attack Iran. So Israel is kind of a big deal there.

The only people who suggested that monorails are supposed to be cheap are people who came into it really wanting a monorail.

Guilty, I have to admit that the Monorail society page worked as a sort of affirmative bias. Also monorail is transition to a future maglev system.
