Jan Chełmiński (1851 - 1925) Jan Chełmiński, was one of the most popular painters of the “Polish - Munich” circle. He began his studies under the supervision of Juliusz Kossak and then studied at the Wrarsaw Drawing Class and at the Munich Academy under the supervision of Aleksander Strähuber and Alexander Wagner (1873-1875) as well as in the private workshops of Joseph Brandt (1875) and Franz Adam (1876). After he graduated, from 1882 he lived abroad in London (the years 1882, 1888-1899) and Paris (1899), he also visited Petersburg (1889) and New York (1884), where he settled later (round the year 1915). Chełmiński never lost his touch with Poland. He often sent his pieces to polish exhibitions. The artist mainly painted battle and army scenes as well as generic paintings and hunting episodes. He also worked in book illustrations; among others, he illustrated Theodore Roosevelt’s Tome of Hunting Stories. He was also a weapon collector and an expert on army uniforms.
