You Can Write in 140 Chars. But Can You Code in 140 Chars?

twitter-logoThis one might be a bit confusing at first, so bear with me. Twitter messages are capped to 140 characters, right? But now a coder named Marek Foss has managed to code a functional Twitter clone using only 140 characters of code.

He wrote the application, which you can test out here, in Perl, and now he’s throwing the glove to other developers to try and create a working web application using only 140 characters of code, in whatever language they choose.

Yesterday we saw an attempt to recreate a Shakespeare play with tweets, and now this; Twitter mania definitely isn’t showing signs of weakening.

  1. For some reason this reminds me on the glorious times of programmable calculators.

  3. The “great” part is being able to code a “functional twitter-clone” without exceeding 140 characters..
    As “Pictures” (commenter above you) mentioned, it reminds us of the days when we create ‘programs’ (as it was used to be called) with short pieces of code, and it’s very useful already.

  4. It’s hardly a functional twitter clone but nice to see anyway

  5. Why don’t just use pastebin and post the link to Twitter?

  6.
<?php $t=time();$c=1234567890-$t;echo"in ".$c."sec. is UNIX tweet"; ?>
7. …the commentform messed up the code!!! :(

  8. I think I crashed it. When I typed in a URL it told me to die ;-) I could do it in 140 characters if the character list were suffeciently big enough, say one million or so different characters. :-)

    I can say “FAIL” in only 4 letters…

  10. It is a kick to bloatware all over:
    For us remembering OS’s where one knew every file this is bliss…

  11. I am glad to see that my original post at Twitter (http://twitter.com/arunshroff/statuses/1188353497) inspired Marek to post and then take up the challenge of actually coding a 140 character app in Perl,
    I am sure that even more interesting applications will be forthcoming in the next 2 weeks,
    While Perl is probably the best language to use for this, I remember I used to code in APL – in which you cold do amazing things in 140 characters !

  12. Same in PHP, but 124 caracters only^^

    <?php
    file_put_contents(‘n’,htmlentities($_GET['n']).”",FILE_APPEND);
    include ‘n’;

  13. Please, it’s just some sort of form submit and echo (no idea what the terms are in Perl language.

    Found a bug can post using just the url and if you reload the page
    after posting the same message will pop up again and again but no this is kind of cool

  15. Marek Foss

    The Challenge is over now and it produced 32 awesome webapps, all at most 140 chars of code! Thanks for all who took part! You can VOTE on your fav app at http://f055.net/article/final-wrap-up-of-the-14… !
