Steve Kimock opening for Steve Kimock?

Steve Kimock & Billy Goodman :: 10.03 :: NJ
That's exactly what happened Friday night at Mexicali Live. The venue offered up the royal treatment – the dance floor was transformed into an elegant space filled with tables and two rows of seats right up next to the stage, a relaxing, intimate atmosphere that perfectly complimented the two sets that Kimock and company played.

Kimock and longtime friend Billy Goodman opened the night with legendary tunes ("Friend of The Devil") and standard favorites. The setlist followed Goodman's stories of the past - there is history between these two musicians. Kimock's precise and deliberate notes seemed to be perfectly complimented by Goodman's slide guitar and scratchy vocals. The highlight of the set was when Billy got Steve to actually sing! "This is the only song that I can get Steve to sing along to," said Goodman as they went into the Rolling Stones' "Dead Flowers." Everyone in the crowd went absolutely wild.

The second set brought out Kimock's son, Jon Morgan Kimock and Trevor Exter to complete the group of "friends." Loose, experimental jamming allowed the musicians freedom where Exter switched from cello to bass and Goodman switched up his guitar with bouts of tambourine playing. The performance of "Night Train," which Exter took front stage for, was energetic and mesmerizing. Kimock classics like "It's Up to You" and "Thing One" filled out a powerful set of music.

That had too have been a pretty sick show. Steve's son is a pretty damn good drummer too. He has an awesome little duo called the Kind Killers that has a similar style to the Duo.

Love Kimock, he is the man. Like most, I crave the SKB, but until then I would suggest checking out Jim Weider's ProJECT PERCoLAToR, they are nasty. Jim Weider, Rodney Holmes, Mitch Stein and Steve Lucas; serious chops, one of the best shows I have seen this year.
