The People's Score

UPDATED REVIEW: Post Skyrim. Witcher 2 is a flawed masterpiece. THE GOOD: The Narrative, the plot lines and the dialogue are all amazing, possibly the best to ever be offered in a video game. This is not merely literary gaming, it is a game as living literature. An achievement that needs to be recognised. THE BAD: Sadly the narrative totally dominates the game, so W2 is very much a railroad, limited and chained into cutscenes. The explorable areas are far too few and far too small. The Graphics are TERRIBLE. As for Crysis, the romantic idea of using the full power of the PC to make 'great images' is a STUPID idea, that leads to a technical disaster. Graphics do NOT need to be maximised. They need to be OPTIMISED. That is made as effective as possible in creating the best images with the least hardware demands. The Witcher 2 was unplayable on many rigs. on mine it was ugly as sin waiting for textures to pop in sometimes 5 seconds into a scene. Not a case of innovation, or genre leading excellence, the graphics in W2 are BAD. period. Skyrim, which is brilliantly optimised shows the way here. Gameplay: Witcher 2 suffers from the unpleasant surprise of a large number of QTEs. Why these were added is a mystery? perhaps to punctuate the boredom that develops while we spend so much of our time watching cut scenes. Adding QTEs does not make us forgive the excess of cutscenes. It makes us hate them more, since QTEs EXPAND the whole scripted sections of the game. Can't we just push the ESC key to avoid all this sheet? The UI is difficult to navigate and mouse unfriendly. The combat system is not as cool in reality as it sounds on paper (because of the limited in-game camera). The character development system is disappointing. All in all, Witcher 2 is great in only one dimension: as the story of Geralt of Rivera. He is a great character, and a very likeable character, since he is presented as ultimately very calm, very SANE and very humane, in the cruel violent world around him. What this great character and great story needs is a larger stage to perform on (Skyrim would be big enough) and a more engaging combat system (Dark Souls!). A truly good game though would produce a similar level of emotional engagement without the railroading dimension. Ultimately we all need our own characters, so a game needs a great character generation system, since finally the point is WE want to make the stories, not be passengers in someone else's stories (even a great one). Witcher 2 is a great game, and a must play for RPG fans. But it leaves us hungry as all the titles of 2011 leave us hungry for the really good RPG game of this generation that has not yet been made. Who will make it? Bioware? Bethesda? CD Projekt? Between Skyrim's World, Witchers Story Telling and the Dragon Age Origins character Generation system and party gameplay lies the answer. We need a developer of genius to bring the elements together. Read More »
