Russian Culture Monday: Uglich

Monday January 16, 2012

UglichUglich is the site of one of Russian history's most famous murders. The male child of Ivan the Terrible, who may have succeeded to the throne had his older brother bore no sons, was found dead in Uglich in 1591. Dmitri was only a boy at the time, and though his death might have been an accident, it is likely that Boris Godunov had Dmitri killed to prevent him from ever claiming the throne. The murder instigated the appearance of several so-called False Dmitris who were sometimes supported by those who wanted power for themselves or instability in Russia.

Boris Godunov order the clapper of the bell that announced Dmitri's death to be removed, whipped, and banished to Siberia as punishment. The bell in Uglich remains tongueless to this day.

February 14th in Krakow

Thursday January 12, 2012

Have you ever considered celebrating Valentine's Day in Krakow? Poland's favorite destination for couples is still in the throes of winter during Valentine's Day, but the weather doesn't need to detract from the romantic activities, hotels, and restaurants to be found there. In fact, cozying up together in a moodily lit restaurant or viewing centuries' worth of religious and secular art--two perfect activities for getting out of the cold--might be right up you and your partner's alley. Also look for Valentine's Day-weekend hotel deals as you plan your trip.

Russian Culture Monday: Pereslavl-Zalessky

Monday January 9, 2012

Cathedral of the Transfiguration, Pereslavl-ZalesskyPereslavl-Zalessky may not be a city most travelers are familiar with, but this significant city on Russia's Golden Ring is home to a church over 800 years old and was founded and developed by important historic figures. Establish by Prince Andrei Dolgoruky, the celebrated founder of Moscow, it was also the birthplace of Alexander Nevsky, another prince (and later saint) of Russia. Another birth--of a place, rather than a person--also took place here, that of the Russian naval fleet. When you visit Pereslavl-Zalessky, you'll be brought closer to centuries' worth of Russian history and culture.
