WTF Podcast

Episode 145 - Gallagher

Gallagher is the first guest to ever walk out on Marc in the middle of an interview. You’ll hear how it got to that point as the famed watermelon-smasher defends his original brand of comedy (said watermelon-smashing) and his recent strain of on-stage bon mots (which have come under fire for racist and homophobic undertones).

Thanks, Marc and Bob!

Hank November 30, 2011 at 4:35 pm

not funny, my first time listening to marc maron, and he just badgers and it seems like he is a howard stern wanna be.  He seems like one of those people who thinks he is smarter than everyone else.

Dave Jones November 30, 2011 at 5:00 pm

Been a donator since episode 1 & listened to all the episodes (behind a few recently), nice re-hearing this one again. Can’t wait for Mark to come here to Grand Rapids for a live show in March.

Charles Vann November 30, 2011 at 5:56 pm

howard stern wannabe?
we must be listening to two differnt shows

Michael November 30, 2011 at 7:06 pm

Thanks for the link Marc. Here from Bob L’s list! smile

Blake November 30, 2011 at 7:19 pm

Here because of Bob, too. Never heard of Marc Maron before this. Sorry about the loss of your friend Patrice O’Neal today, man. That’s sad, for sure.

Ken November 30, 2011 at 7:26 pm

This is fucking hilarious Marc.  I thought you kept your composure very well talking to a semi-retarded lunatic.  I have no real problems with immaturity, god knows I have some of my own, but Gallagher seems like that little kid that got teased too much and something just snapped and that he hasn’t grown any since then.  I feel sorry for anyone that works with this tard.

Blake November 30, 2011 at 7:42 pm

Jesus…that was hard. Had to stop after…I dunno…half-hour or so. Glad I listened, though. I’ll make sure to never, ever listen to that Gallagher fool again. That whiny, screechy voice drove me away and fast.

John LeBlanc November 30, 2011 at 8:34 pm

I’m another Lefsetz referral and first-time WTF listener.  It seemed like a perfectly reasonable line of questions and could’ve become a healthy debate if Gallagher didn’t take it all so personally and walk.  I wish he’d stuck around longer.

Congrats Marc on an interesting show and prolific episode archive.  Impressive.

Jim November 30, 2011 at 10:26 pm

What a bunch of politically correct garbage.  You set out to make yourself look good at an old washed up comedians expense.  Congrats on the publicity you’ve gained for yourself, but publicity doesn’t equal talent.  Playing the defender of the ultra sensitive is just too easy and boring

Matt M. November 30, 2011 at 11:40 pm

Really grating and hard to listen to.  What’s funny is how much Marc reminds me of myself when I run out of pot.  I’m guessing our politics are similar (liberal) but I just felt bad for Gallagher, even if he is a lame old asshole.  Anyway, racism can be so funny and awesome if it’s done right, but Gallagher is too subtle (old) so it kind of seems like really ignorant racism.  But if Gallagher just said some shit about fags sucking cock and buttfucking etc, it could be funny as fuck.  Tosh.0 is totally racist, but he kind of let’s you know it’s just shtick and he’s not an ignorant fuck.  Anyway, I’m sure this is a complex fucking world for an old asshole like Gallagher to navigate.  Marc seemed to enjoy hammering away there at the end a little too much.  Can’t say I blame the old fuck for bailing.  And this Lefsetz shit is probably more publicity than either of you unfunny assholes deserve.  Real talk.

Matt M November 30, 2011 at 11:43 pm

Wow, could I have said “fuck” a little more???  You should interview the Winnebago man, now that’s some funny-assed shit!!!!

Randall Clay December 01, 2011 at 8:55 am

Lefsetz referral as well…...I was really enjoying the interview. I was actually surprised when he called it. Of course Maron was taking the other side of everything he said…it’s interview 101. If I said “What do you think about “blank”.....oh me too…..moving on…...” that would be a shitty interview. The heated discussion was enjoyable for me. I wish it would’ve continued. Gallagher made some great points and seemed to be defending his position successfully. Maron pushed him, and it seemed to me that all at once he had to go take a shit and needed an reason to excuse himself. At any rate, I’m glad Lefsetz turned me and a lot of others on to this podcast. Will be back for sure. Good job.

I just got the sense that Gallagher talked himself into a corner that he couldn’t talk himself out of. It’s pretty difficult for a person to defend their racism and homophobia when confronted, and he just wasn’t up to it, as evidenced by his weak “it’s not even my material, i heard it on the street” rebuttal. He knows that kind of shit is morally indefensible but he also knows that his bread-basket, bible-belt, state-fair, redneck audience wants so desperately to hear him say it.

Dan December 01, 2011 at 5:46 pm

Here via Bob… I remember liking your stuff and honestly, life hasn’t allowed me to keep to up to speed on stuff. You’ve been off my radar for a bit. Glad to see things are going well (enough) at least.

Myke December 02, 2011 at 2:01 am

Its funny, I’ve been reading Bobs stuff and listening to WTF for quite a while. When Bob posted about the podcast I felt like two of my best friends just met for the first time and now they just wanna hang without me.

Bo December 02, 2011 at 2:29 pm

Here via Bob as well.  Had never listened to you before but must say that I am glad that you let all of us in to hear this interview.  Thank you.  Aside from this particular interview I listened to another one today that I enjoyed as well.  Will be listening more.

Shark December 02, 2011 at 8:40 pm

Here via Bob as well. Actually listened to Chris Rock show first, which gave me a good perspective on your show. When you are interviewing a thoughtful, giving, talented, intelligent man (Chris Rock) you can get into some deep shit and nuance. You kept your cool with a bitter nut job (Gallagher) who couldn’t go to the places you were willing to honestly go. Leno and Leterman wore suits and stood still and wanted Carsons job. They’re both talented, one far more than the lessor one, but, as you mentioned Gallagher is a props comic (nothing wrong with that) but he ain’t gonna get that gig. I’m a fan. Best to you.

Alex December 02, 2011 at 10:57 pm

Love Maron, but this could have been handled much better. He was right to look back and say maybe his tone came off as too aggressive; sure seemed like it did.

Chris December 05, 2011 at 12:28 pm

I am here because of Lefsetz as well.  I had been planning on checking out your podcast for a long while now, but just had never gotten around to digging into the podcast world in general.  Once, I saw Lefsetz’s email about this specific episode, it was a final kick in the ass that I needed to check it out.  I am now a fan/subscriber of the WTF podcast, along with the podcast revolution as a whole.  Thank you for making this episode available to all of us whom where late to the party.

Connor December 14, 2011 at 2:05 am

Mark McCoy December 14, 2011 at 1:28 pm

Marc, This is an amazing insight that only a few people have go to see about a bitter, racially one sided and very offensive comedian/performer. I won’t get into what club that I work at but we have had Gallagher in our club and I was shocked at some of the stuff that came spewing out of his mouth. I shrugged it off and didn’t think anything about it knowing that we would NEVER have him back in our club. He is wondering why no one comes to his shows. He is very confrontative about any subject that you try to talk to him about. He may still have a career if he was an easier person to work with and toned down his true racist beliefs on stage. Thanks for the Podcast and we hope to get you in NJ sometime soon.
