Does Disney’s Polynesian Resort have a date with a wrecking ball in its future? According to a report filed in October on Tikiman‘s website devoted to the beloved Walt Disney World resort, the unthinkable may happen in 2013.
According to rumors, the need to replace the aging Great Ceremonial House, combined with the desire to add Disney Vacation Club rooms, the need to make the resort ADA-compliant, and a possible eventual collapse of the volcano pool may make it more cost-effective to completely demolish the resort and rebuild a new Polynesian Resort using the more-current layout of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, or more directly, the company’s Hawaiian property, Aulani.
The Polynesian has been added on to and renovated several times since it opened in the 1971 as Disney’s Polynesian Village. It’s a beautiful resort, but it’s hard for even its most devoted fans not to agree that it feels old in comparison to newer hotels, like the Animal Kingdom Lodge and Wilderness Lodge. If done correctly, a brand-new Polynesian could easily become the finest hotel on the monorail line.
