Vakeró — “Tu Pai”

Vakeró

"Tu Pai"

Dominican reggae-rap extraordinaire Manuel Baret Martes, better known as Vakeró, just debuted a poignant video for “Tu Pai” (“Your Dad”), the titular track from his latest EP, released last September.

In the clip, Vakeró plays a worker who has fallen in love with the boss’s daughter. Unfortunately, possessive boss-dad isn’t have any of it. After lots of window peering and spying, he tries to foil his daughter’s escape but accidentally shoots her. The video then concludes with the following on-screen coda:

Dominican Republic 2011: 214 femicides
It’s time to stop the violence

It’s great that the “rapper’s singer” (as he’s known) is speaking out on this alarming trend in the Dominican Republic. We also heart the cross-cultural love depicted in the video too. Asian Dominicans, while a visible minority in the country (especially in capital city Santo Domingo), are practically invisible in Dominican pop and mainstream culture and coverage so it’s awesome to see them rep’d on screen.
