NHS Blood and Transplant is warning that a 'perfect storm' could be created by next year's bumper sporting calendar and extra bank holidays, severely affecting blood donation levels in 2012.

15 Dec 2011 Newham Council to lead new initiative to promote blood and organ donation amongst residents
On Wednesday 14 December, the London Borough of Newham will become the first council to sign a formal partnership agreement with NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) aimed at increasing organ and blood donation rates among residents. Building on the support already provided by other councils, the two year agreement will allow efforts to be sustained and momentum to be maintained in awareness-raising efforts.

7 Dec 2011 NHSBT makes special appeal to O- and B- blood donors
An appeal is going out to O Rh negative (O-) and B Rh negative (B-) blood donors to come forward now to give blood in the run up to Christmas.

The permanent exclusion of men who have sex with men from donating blood has been lifted today (Monday 7 November) and replaced by a 12 month fixed period of deferral from the last relevant sexual contact.
