Cousin Bette is a 1998 comedy that was adapted from Honore de Balzac's popular novel La Cousine Bette. The film is set in Paris right before the 1848 French Revolution, where Cousin Bette (Jessica Lange) finds herself an old spinster and feels quite lonely when her wealthy sister passes away. She tries desperately to intertwine her life with that of her brother-in-law Baron Hector Hulot (Hugh Laurie) and her niece Hortense Hulot (Kelly McDonald). This extended family makes it very clear to Bette that they do not want her in their lives and she becomes very angry. She rescues a handsome sculptor, Wenceslas Steinbach (Aden Young) from starvation and quickly falls in love with him. His love for her does not last and he leaves her for his new love, Hortense. Bette sees this as a direct betrayal by her niece and she vows to get revenge. Bette along with her friend Jenny Cadine (Elisabeth Shue) work to destroy the lives of those who have done her wrong.moreless
