Cyrano de Bergerac is a 1950 film set in seventeenth century Paris and directed by Michael Gordon. Poet and expert swordsman Cyrano de Bergerac (Jose Ferrer) is the central character in the film. He has an overly large nose which others mock but he is eloquent in both the written and spoken word. Cyrano is in love with Roxanne (Mala Powers) but does not think he has a chance of his love being reciprocated because of his large nose. Before he has a chance to tell Roxanne his feelings, she informs him that she is in love with a handsome guardsman called Christian de Neuvillette (William Prince). Despite his own love for Roxanne, Cyrano agrees to help her find love with Christian. Cyrano makes friends with Christian and helps him write love letters to woo Roxanne. The approach is a success and Roxanne and Christian are married. However the question remains whether it is the beauty of the letters or Christian himself that Roxanne really loves. Many years pass before the truth about the real author of the love letters is revealed to Roxanne in tragic circumstances.
