Gunga Din is a 1939 adventure movie directed by George Stevens. Based in 1880 India, the story is loosely based on a Ruyard Kipling poem of the same name. The movie features Cary Grant, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Victor MacLaglen as three sergeants with the British Royal Engineers. When contact is lost with a British outpost as Tantrapur, the three sergeants lead a small group of British Indian troops to investigate. An Indian waterboy Gunga Din (Sam Jaffe), who wants nothing more than to serve the British army also joins the group. It is soon discovered that the once dormant Thuggee cult has again emerged and is responsible for the disappearance of the outpost troops. To complicate matters, Gunga Din discovers the murderous cult's gold-filled temple. Something they will protect with their lives. Outnumbered, the troops are forced to engage in a standoff with the vicious natives hoping that reinforcements will soon arrive.
