John Rabe is a 2009 German movie about John Rabe (Ulrich Tukur), whose actions during the 1937 Rape of Nanking made him a hero to the Chinese people. Virtually unknown in much of the west, Rabe is renowned to the Chinese as a humanitarian who, because of his connections with the Nazis, was able to save 200,000 Chinese civilians from death at the hands of the Nazi's Imperial Japanese allies. He establishes an international safe zone in the city with the help of an American doctor (Steve Buscemi), but his relations with the Japanese military become more and more strained. Rabe appeals to none other than Adolf Hitler himself to help aid the suffering Chinese. This movie, like the much more well-known story of Oskar Schindler of "Schindler's List", tells of the triumph of a few who are able to make a difference in the lives of many. The language of the film is historically accurate, being predominantly in German, Chinese, and English.moreless

Despite the emotive subject matter, picture is often too sluggish dramatically, and never knits together its stock Western characters into a satisfying whole.
