Muriel's Wedding tells the story of homely Aussie Muriel Heslop (Toni Collette) in her lifelong quest for matrimony. 22-year-old Muriel is the token 'ugly girl' in her small, superficial clique of childhood friends. When one of the girls finds out her hours-long husband has been having an affair she chooses to take the girls on her honeymoon with her. Muriel, intentionally excluded from the trip, finds out she is nothing more than an embarrassment to the group. Obviously shaken and hurt by the revelation she stoops to theft and takes a holiday in the same resort as her betrayers with money stolen from her family. There she reconnects with another school mate, Rhonda (Rachel Griffiths), and the two move away together to Sydney. Drama follows Muriel and she finds herself tangled up in a virtually endless mess of family secrets, betrayal, heartache and loss. An Australian film gem not to missed, Muriel's Wedding hints of the universal insecurities we all share.moreless
