Shotgun Stories is a saga of the hatred between two families. The Hayes brothers, Son (Michael Shannon), Boy (Douglas Ligon) and Kid (Barlow Jacobs) are born to a spiteful, violent and alcoholic father who won't even give them proper names. The father eventually leaves his kids with their hateful mother, but he ends up a born-again Christian with a new and improved family. The boys' mother teaches them to hate their father and his new family, which leads Son, Boy and Kid to show up at their father's funeral with malice in their hearts. Their eulogy is unflattering, to say the least, and this creates a great stir among the father's new family. What results is an escalating blood feud between half-brothers that leaves both families worse off. Shotgun Stories is a sad and tragic example of betrayal, repentance and hatred in an inescapable reality of the rural existence in southeast Arkansas.
