Smiles of a Summer Night is a 1955 romantic comedy directed by Ingmar Bergman. The film follows the comical mishaps and romantic confusion of several men and women living in Sweden in the early 1900s. Fredrik Egerman (Gunnar Bj''rnstrand) is a middle-aged and successful lawyer. Although he has been married to beautiful young Anne (Ulla Jacobsson ) for several years, she is unwilling to consumate their marriage, leading to Fredrik's frustration. Little does Fredrik know that his young son, Henrik (Bj''rn Bjelfvenstam), is tormented by his love for Anne. Although Anne returns the feelings, both know they cannot cheat on Fredrik. Henrik finds solace in the arms of Petra (Harriet Andersson), a servant. To make matters even more confusing, Fredrik is still haunted by his former love affair with beautiful Desiree (Eva Dahlbeck), an actress now involved with the unsavory Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm (Jarl Kulle). Since the Count's wife, Charlotte (Margit Carlqvist), is friends with Anne, it is not very long before their fates entwine, leading to many romantic dalliances and confused feelings.moreless
