Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines is a 1965 comedy film made by Ken Annakin. The screenplay is based off of a play called Flying Crazy. Although the film was made in 1965, the story actually takes place in 1910. Lord Rawnsley (Robert Morley) is a newspaper mogul. He is interested in increasing awareness of his most recent newspaper and comes up with a creative way to disperse this information. He challenges every man in England to fly across the English Channel, to France. The winner will win 10,000 pounds. Fourteen serious contestants enlist themselves, most of whom fall within a very specific national stereotype - there is the austere Pollack, the impulsive French man, and the rough American. But there's a couple of bad apples in the bunch, namely a man named Percy Ware-Armitage (Terry Thomas) and his assistant Courtney (Eric Sykes). They sabotage the other contestants' chances of winning by drugging them and manipulating their airplanes so that they cannot fly. And in the midst of all this chaos, there is also a blossoming love triangle between Orvil Newton (Stuart Whitman) and Richard Mays (James Fox) who both vie for Patricia Rawnsley (Sarah Miles), Lord Rawnsley's daughter. Those Magnificent Men has received several awards and a lot of critical acclaim throughout the years. TV Guide sums it up with the following review: "Good, clean fun, with fast and furious action, good cinematography, crisp dialogue, wonderful planes, and a host of some of the funniest people in movies in the cast."moreless
