  • Yet again Sky Atlantic shows how television drama should be done, with Kate Winslet's compelling Mildred Pierce

I remember as a boy seeing the original Joan Crawford movie - a very compressed version that did little justice to this excellent book. This mini series brought to life the America of the depression years with solid performances from all of the cast and a star performance from Kate Winslet. A particular credit has to go to the actresses... more who took on the character of Veda young and adult; an absolute b***h if ever I saw one. Sky Atlantic is treating us to some great TV Drama please don't stop

  • In this age of information, programs run the risk of overexposure, leaving the potential viewer with an overdose of hype.

I feel this happened with this mini-series. The story has been done, in a forties movie, starring Joan Crawford. The book on which the series/movie is based was a bestseller. But for some reason, HBO bombarded us with trailers, "making of" features, and commercial interruptions. By the time of the two-part premiere, I had already formed an opinion about Kate... more Winslett's performance, and the various characters in the story.

The story isn't all that interesting, and certainly doesn't require five hours to tell it. Pierce comes across as simultaneously strong-willed and needy. The way she lets her daughter walk all over her is pathetic. The "gigolo" she takes up with is so unlikeable we are forced to suspend disbelief to believe she would have feelings for him. I was able to view the program only through episode Three - I know how it ends and am not interested in watching.

The rating, which is overly generous, is for Winslett, who as usual gives a good performance, with the tools she is forced to work with.
