Obama Says Support For Israel ‘unshakable’

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is telling a Jewish group that his administration has done more than any other to support Israel. He says his commitment to Israel is unshakable.

Obama has come under persistent attack from Republicans heading into the 2012 election who say he hasn’t done enough for Israel. But he says it’s a fact that his administration has been there for Israel, at the United Nations and elsewhere. Said the president: “Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.”

The president made his comments Friday at a conference of the Union for Reform Judaism, a large gathering of North American Jews.

Perry Double Dips State Salary And Pension

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Gov. Rick Perry is a double-dipper, collecting a salary and retirement benefits simultaneously.

A personal financial disclosure form that presidential candidates are required to file shows that Perry is collecting his $7,700 monthly state pension. That is allowable under state law, using a complicated formula.

Perry’s salary as governor is roughly $133,000.

Collecting retirement benefits while drawing a state salary will likely expose Perry to criticism from those who complain that public sector employees are too generously compensated.

Perry’s financial disclosure form was made public Friday by the Federal Election Commission.

He reported a net worth of at least $1.3 million and an annual income of $290,000.

Congress Moves To Restrict Aid To Egypt, Pakistan

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress would impose restrictions on aid to Egypt, Pakistan and the Palestinian Authority in a $53.3 billion bill that avoids the deep cuts in foreign assistance and State Department funding that Republicans had pursued this year.

The legislation is part of a sweeping, $1 trillion-plus year-end spending package that provides money for 10 Cabinet agencies through September. The House passed the measure on Friday and the Senate is expected to vote sometime this weekend.

Foreign aid amounts to just 1 percent of the federal budget, but lawmakers intent on cutting the deficit, especially conservative tea party Republicans, have clamored for significant reductions in spending overseas. Democrats and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton pressed to spare the accounts.

Romney Criticized For Remark About Medicaid

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Mitt Romney has opened himself up to ridicule by saying he didn’t understand Medicaid until he started working in government.

Democrats immediately pounced on the Republican presidential candidate, saying the comment was further proof that he’s out of touch.

Romney told the audience at an event in Sioux City, Iowa, on Friday that he didn’t understand Medicaid until he got into government. Medicaid is a federal-state health care program for the poor and disabled.

Romney later tried to clarify the remark by saying he understood the program but didn’t exactly understand how it was funded.

The 64-year-old Romney first ran for public office, a U.S. Senate seat in Massachusetts, in 1994.

9 States Win Early Education Grant

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nine states won a collective $500 million Friday from the federal government to help make pre-K and other early learning programs more accessible and better capable of narrowing the achievement gap between those who start kindergarten without any formal schooling and those who do.

California, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Washington state were announced as winners at the White House.

“Nothing is more important than getting our babies off to a good start,” said Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

Manning Hearing Bogs Down Over Dispute

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) — Pfc. Bradley Manning, the young soldier accused of aiding the enemy by slipping a trove of national security secrets to WikiLeaks, sat quietly at the opening session of his pretrial hearing Friday as government and defense lawyers tangled over whether the presiding officer could be impartial.

Manning’s civilian defense lawyer argued that the presiding officer, Paul Almanza, an Army Reserve lieutenant colonel, is biased and should step aside, but Almanza refused. Almanza also denied a move by Manning’s defense to suspend the hearing while seeking to appeal Almanza’s decision to continue on the case.
