SITTINGBOURNE'S Dolphin Sailing Barge Museum has been destroyed in a fire that has devastated its supporters. The alarm was raised at 8.20pm on Sunday and at least 20 firefighters fought the flames. Police were called because there was no obvious reason why the fire had started. Peter Morgan, a former chairman of the museum, said: "I feel sick in my stomach." A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman confirmed the fire is being treated as suspicious.

“I am extremely saddened at this news. I have been living in Sittingbourne for over 15 years and have regualy visited local historic sights as i'm very keen !
I frequently trip off to milton creek, The SKLR and even the Barge Museum. All the people i meet there were very helpfull and willing to teach me about the heydey of our prosperous town. I was even gratefull for their hospitality in letting me take a free visit around. I hope that the the yard sight stays put as historic interest. An idea for it's future could prehaps be a working yard instead, with an interpretation of the yard instead, therefore bringing the history to life. All the best !”

“It's is very sad to hear of this news as the Dolphin Barge Museum has lots of potential. It is even more important now that it is included in the regeneration plans for the town.
I hope that as much as possible can be salvaged and I wish everyone at the museum all the best. A phoenix can arise from the ashes, I'm sure.”
