Bottom Line: YMax magicJack will let you make and receive free calls within the U.S. for a low annual price, but other products do it much better and provide better technical support and documentation.

Bottom Line: Vonage can lower your monthly home phone bill pretty significantly, but it can't match the deep savings you'll get from netTALK DUO—unless you make a lot of international calls. Vonage's international plans are superb.

Bottom Line: The Ooma Telo aims to save you money by letting you ditch traditional telephone service and use Internet-based calls, while still talking on an ordinary phone handset. But you need to do the math for yourself. The quality is about as good as most mobile-to-mobile calls: sometimes choppy, but clear enough.

Bottom Line: NetTALK DUO saves you money by letting you ditch traditional telephone service in favor of Internet-based calls using an ordinary phone handset connected to your router. The flat yearly cost, about $30, is competitive. If you're going to go the VoIP route and still want a handset, netTALK is your best bet.

Bottom Line: Google Voice is not quite ready to take over all of your voice and telephony needs, but it comes very close considering that it's almost entirely free.
