Saturday, 07 January 2012

A delegation from Syrian National Council (SNC) met with key officials from the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Brussels on Thursday Jan 5, 2012. The SNC delegation included Dr. Burhan Ghalioun, SNC President; Executive Committee members Haitham Al-Maleh, Dr. Abdulbaset Sieda, and Abdulahad Astepho; and SNC member Bassem Hatahet. The Belgian ministry officials were headed by Mr. Didier Reynders, Foreign Minister.

Mr. Reynders welcomed the SNC delegation with warm wishes for success. Dr. Burhan Ghalioun thanked the Foreign Minister for his welcome and provided a detailed overview of the SNC and its operating principles, then discussed the current difficulties the Syrian people are facing given the authoritarianism and tyranny of the Syrian regime. Dr. Ghalioun affirmed that the Syrian Revolution would continue steadfastly until it achieves its objectives. The SNC delegation also called for a European fund to support and assist the Syrian people, who face terrible conditions due to the regime's continuing practice of responding militarily to the 10-month-long peaceful civilian uprising.

The SNC delegation also reaffirmed its commitment to work closely with other Syrian opposition groups to unite and focus efforts on ousting the regime and all its symbols and pillars, starting with the head of the regime himself.

The Foreign Minister indicated Belgium's support and sympathy for the Syrian people. He committed to referring the SNC requests to the European Union, and working to support the SNC's goals until they become a reality on the ground.
