The Student Scholar Program

The Student Scholar Program provides a means for college students or recent graduates to publish academic papers before a global audience. These are papers that were written by the students to fulfill class and graduation requirements of their respective academic institutions. Papers submitted will be evaluated and those selected will be published as papers in AnthroJournal, a sister publication to  Popular Archaeology. Submissions are free and all students whose papers are selected  will receive a free one-year premium* subscription to Popular Archaeology Magazine effective from the date of paper publication.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

Eligibility

Participants should be currently matriculated in a college institution or be graduates who are within a year after completing their degree requirements, whether it be a Bachelors degree, Masters degree, or Ph.D..

The paper submitted should have obtained a grade of B+ or better as assigned by the appropriate instructor of their academic institution. It could be a general research paper, term paper, final course paper, Masters Thesis, or Ph.D dissertation that is unrestricted for publication in venues outside of the academic institution.

The topic and subject matter of the paper should be related to archaeology, anthropology, ancient history, or more recent history if the paper includes a significant archaeological element.

Procedure

Submit the text of the paper directly to the magazine's text editor utility by registering as a free (regular) subscriber to the magazine and copying the text of the paper into the text editor form. (Becoming a subscriber simplifies the submission process and also permits us to communicate with you, as necessary, to provide information, answer questions and announce your status). Include the title of the paper, the name of the author (you), and a brief bio about yourself at the end. Provide a brief, one-paragraph abstract or summary of your paper at the beginning of the text. Note that you are submitting the paper under the Student Scholar Program. To get to the text editor after you have subscribed, you will need to log in to the magazine and then click on "submit article" in the top right-hand section of the magazine home page. Images and photos, however, should always be sent to populararchaeology@gmail.com, identifying the associated paper and any text placement preferences for the images. Drafts may also be sent via email as attachments to populararchaeology@gmail.com, if the author so chooses.

Other Requirements

There are six application periods a year. The deadlines for submission are: May 1, July 1, September 1, November 1, January 1, March 1

A student may submit only one paper during the application period, but is eligible to submit a different paper for each of all succeeding periods.

Evaluation Criteria

All applicants' papers will be screened based on the following general criteria:

Written Quality: clarity, conciseness, accuracy, and grammatical quality

Document Support: Is the paper well supported with references and sources?

Additional consideration may be given to papers that stand out in terms of the uniqueness or originality of the topic and/or the depth of the research.
