Turkish film critics to honor film director Kıral, writer Şahin

3 January 2012 / TODAY’S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
Filmmaker/scriptwriter Erden Kıral, author/scriptwriter Osman Şahin and actress Perihan Savaş will be honored by the Turkish Film Critics Association (SİYAD) when the association holds its annual awards ceremony later this month in İstanbul, Turkish news agencies reported on Tuesday.

The three veterans of Turkish cinema will be honored on Jan. 16 during the 44th edition of the annual SİYAD Awards ceremony at the Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall (CRR) in İstanbul’s Harbiye district, the Anatolia news agency reported.

Kıral, 70 years old, is best known for “Bereketli Topraklar Üzerinde” (On Fertile Lands), an international award-winning 1980 drama the director/screenwriter adapted for the big screen from a novel of the same name by Orhan Kemal. Among the more than 10 titles Kıral directed are the 1983 drama “Hakkari’de Bir Mevsim” (A Season in Hakkari), which won a Silver Bear award at the 1983 Berlin Film Festival, and his 1988 film “Av Zamanı” (Hunting Time), a drama about the Sept. 12, 1980 coup d’état, which also ran in Berlin.

Şahin, a 72-year-old writer, co-authored the scripts of many internationally acclaimed Yeşilçam movies, including the 1985 films “Züğürt Ağa” (The Broken Landlord), a comedy directed by Nesli Çölgeçen, and the drama “Kurbağalar” (Frogs), by Şerif Gören and Zeki Ökten.

Savaş began her acting career in 1971 as a child actress in theater and on the big screen, and went on to act in more than 120 films to date.

SİYAD will announce the nominees for its 44th annual awards on Friday. All Turkish movies that have been released in theaters throughout the past year are eligible for awards, which are handed out in 11 categories, including best film, best director, best screenplay, best score and a number of acting categories. The association also has a Best Foreign Film Award, for which all overseas productions that have opened in Turkey in the past year can compete.
