  • Stillwater's Annual Trash-Off seeks volunteers for March 31 event

    The City of Stillwater Environmental Programs is looking for volunteers for the Annual Trash-Off that will be held Saturday, March 31 from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are need to clean up trash from areas all around town. Work gloves and safety vests will be provided.

    To RSVP, contact Environmental Programs at (405) 533-8482 by March 23. Be sure to include the number of people in your group. Individuals are also welcome. Volunteers will meet at the City of Stillwater Community Center, 315 W 8th Ave.

  • From the Stillwater Fire Department: Winter heating, winter weather safety tips

    (STILLWATER, OKLA / Jan. 26, 2012) – Most Stillwater area residents have heating costs on their minds.Whether primarily heating their homes with gas or electricity, local families are always mindful of energy costs during the winter months. While the projected rise in heating costs this winter could be devastating for many wallets, increased use of alternative heating equipment – like pellet stoves, wood stoves and space heaters – could have an even more devastating effect on the already serious home heating fire problem.

    As a leading cause of home fires, heating is a concern for every community every winter. This year, with the projected increase in use of alternative heating equipment, families need to be especially vigilant to use all heating appliances properly.

    Alternative heating sources are not inherently a greater fire risk; with caution they can be used safely. That’s why Stillwater Fire Department is encouraging residents using pellet stoves, wood stoves, space heaters or any other non-traditional home heating equipment this winter to follow this advice:

  • Lakeside Golf Course's general manager recognized by U.S. Kids Golf

    Lakeside Golf Course's Michael Henderson received honorable mention for the 2011 class of Top 50 Kids Teachers, as announced by U.S. Kids Golf.

    Henderson, who was nominated by through the South Central PGA Section, is Lakeside's general manager and head golf professional. He joins two other Oklahomans—Pat Bates, Gaillardia Country Club of Oklahoma City, and PGA Master Professional Steve Ball—who received the same honor.

    Every year, U.S. Kids Golf recognizes instructors who have demonstrated "great dedication to teaching youth golf. Honorees exemplify leadership, superior teaching ability, and recognition from one’s peers and the community at large." This is the first time Henderson has received an award for a junior golf program.

  • Tickets on sale for annual' Dancing with Daddy' Friday, Feb. 10

    The 7th Annual Dancing with Daddy will be held on Friday, Feb. 10 at the City of Stillwater Community Center, 315 W. 8th Ave. The dance, organized by the City of Stillwater Parks and Recreation Department, will feature refreshments, a professional photographer, door prizes, and music by Shake Rattle & Roll.

    Dancing with Daddy, will be divided into two sessions with preschoolers to second graders dancing from 6:30 – 8 p.m. and third graders and above dancing from 8:30 – 10 p.m. Advance tickets may be purchased online until 5 p.m. on Feb. 8 at tickets.stillwater.org. Advance tickets are $25 per couple with $10 for each additional daughter.

  • FEMA funding advances Babcock Basin Hazard Mitigation Project

    The City of Stillwater announced that Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approved a grant application for phase I (the design phase) of the Babcock Basin Flood Hazard Mitigation Project. Babcock Basin is located in southwest Stillwater.

    The grant provides funding in the amount of $250,744 for development of an engineering stormwater system design. In order to meet the timeframe established by FEMA and to have the design portion of the project completed, Ellen W. Stevens, Ph.D., P.E., PLLC, has been contracted for engineering services.

  • Play Ball! Join a Parks & Rec Spring Sports League: Youth k-ball, youth softball, youth baseball, adult volleyball, adult softball

    Registration is under way for the City of Stillwater Parks & Recreation's spring sports season, which includes youth k-ball, youth softball, youth baseball, adult volleyball and adult softball leagues.

    Registration forms are available online and at Parks and Recreation Administrative Office, 315 E. 9th Ave. Office hours are Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. For more information or to speak to a customer service representative, call (405) 747-8070. Cash, checks, and credit/debit cards are accepted.

  • Multi Arts Center offers spring art classes for adults, teens, children

    The City of Stillwater Multi Arts Center (MAC) announced a new list of art classes for children and adults. The spring semester is scheduled to begin Jan.17, and the class brochure offers 36 different classes taught by 15 local artists.

    The classes are organized with flexibility in mind, and there is a wide variety of one or two day workshops for students whose busy schedules don’t allow for a longer commitment. For those who would like a more in-depth study, some classes meet weekly for as many as twelve weeks. Most classes meet in the evenings or on weekends to accommodate school and work schedules.

  • Election dates set for Stillwater City Council

    The Stillwater City Council passed the resolution calling for a primary and general election for "Councilor No. 5, Mayor," for a three year term. The filing period for those seats will run from Feb. 6 to Feb. 8. A primary election is scheduled for March 6 and the general election is set for April 3.

    Candidates file at the County Election Board located in the Payne County Administration Building at 6th Avenue and Duck Stret. Qualification for office: registered voter who has resided within Stillwater for at least six months preceding the filing and who are at least 21 years old. Municipal elections are nonpartisan.

  • Stillwater Rural Fire Service contract for 2012 available

    The Rural Fire Service Contract allows property owners to minimize the cost of rural fire service fees in the event of a fire response to property outside the corporate city limits. The response fee for fire service is set by City of Stillwater ordinance at $500 minimum and a maximum of $2,000 per incident for contracted properties. When the property is not covered under a Rural Fire Service Contract, a minimum charge of $500 applies and there is no limit on the maximum fire charges.
