Eid Al-Adha: Some Prayers Last Longer Than Others

Posted: 11/6/11 07:00 PM ET

I just wanted to share some brief thoughts on the Muslim holiday.

There are millions of Muslims on the verge of concluding their pilgrimage (hajj) in Mecca; by the time you read this, they're already finished, exhausted and sharing the meat of a sacrificed animal with family, neighbors and the poor. Across the world, hundreds of millions more are putting on their Sunday finest -- thanks to God and the moon and the curvature of space-time for complying with the spirit and the law of the Western weekend -- and heading to mosques. Often way too early in the morning. (Can we comply with the Western sleep cycle?)

It's Eid al-Adha today, the Feast of the Sacrifice, the biggest holiday of the pan-Muslim calendar. Muslims remember Abraham's decision to sacrifice his son, spared only at the very last moment. In honor of that moment, an animal is sacrificed to God and its meat is shared with those close and those in need. The day before was the Day of 'Arafat, when many fast -- as in Ramadan -- in honor of the standing at the plain of 'Arafat, where Muslims on hajj pour their hearts out to God. But really and ultimately, this holiday is about Abraham.

The reason Abraham affects us so is because of his life's tragedies. God is asking Abraham to take the life of his son; rationally, reasonably, that is unbelievable. In the broader Islamic tradition, murder is of course forbidden: We've got Cain and Abel too. And this is sort of what Abraham keeps getting: He doesn't have children until his very old age, and this is a source of great distress for him. As it would be for any of us, but especially in his day and age. And then, when he has a son, God says, dump him in the desert. When he finds him years later, much to his relief and joy -- we can imagine tears of happiness -- God says: Take his life. Show me and the world you love me most.

Abraham's father refused to believe in him. His people tried to kill him. They even made a fire to burn him in, and tossed him in. He wanders alone through the world, without offspring, for years; even married, for a long time he has no descendants. When finally God gives him Isaac and Ishmael, he is asked to leave Ishmael and Hagar (Ishmael's mother) in the wilderness of Paran, the deserts around Mecca. In that stunning, amazing, incredible request, Islam truly and properly begins. The spiritual ground is seeded in a sacrifice that will echo through time, and result in the Prophet Muhammad, Abraham's final heir through his son Ishmael, and the global Muslim community, the Prophet Muhammad's brothers and sisters.

Who says prayers aren't answered?

Time and again, Abraham is asked to sacrifice like no normal person is, or could be. He is asked to abandon, or take the life of his child, and God in each case intervenes. God saves. God guides. The greatest destiny unfolds in that tiny, stunning, unbelievable gesture of faith in God against all common sense. Or, as Iqbal put it, discussing Abraham elsewhere:

"Love dove into Nimrod's fire without hesitation / While reason's on the rooftop, merely considering the scene."

This is what Muslims celebrate on Sunday.

That prayers are answered, even if they aren't answered in our lifetime. That God tests us according to our capacity, and those of us who face the most hardship in dignity and fidelity are the most awesome in His sight. That God's promise is true. That the aches and pains in our souls will be healed one day. Perhaps not in this life, though; we must hold on to the rope of God until then.

Abraham was terrified he wouldn't have children. And in return for his faith, God gave him half the planet, Jewish, Christian and Muslim. It may well be that many of us pray more for Abraham and Muhammad than we do for any other families. Including our own. And the Muslim community centers its identity on him. We are his spiritual family, or at least hope to be. Little children of every ethnicity and nationality, all across the planet, stumble across words they will repeat for the rest of their lives, words they're taught to memorize, and often given gifts if they do, words which have an especially profound meaning on us today:

Allah bless Muhammad, and the family of Muhammad
As you blessed Abraham, and the family of Abraham

Eid Mubarak.

Wow. You know, I've been a Muslim for many years and didn't know this deeper meaning of Eid. Thanks!

Haroon Mogul forgot the most amazing part of the story:of Hajj the Muslim holiday: 5 million people (men, women and children) walk in the steps of our mother Hagar honoring her and all mothers who struggle for their children and stay in the path of Allah in complete obedience To Him the Almighty. Without this act of honoring a woman and a mother the Hajj is not complete.

It would be a true testament to the love and appreciation for Abraham, if this long-separated family, the Jews and the Muslims, were to reunite in harmony. It sure would ease a lot of the world's pain. Words are just words, but action will have a greater testimonial.

I am sorry; this kind of love is not to be. There will be a last war were God Himself will intervene. I see mentioned in the article of Ishmael the son of Abraham and Hagar his wife’s handmaid as well in some of the comments. Ishmael is not the son of the covenant between God and Abraham neither are those of Abraham’s concubines. It was Isaac born to him and Sarah. Isaac is the only one that God asked as a sacrifice as a testament of Abraham’s faith when the heavenly ram was provided instead. It was a onetime thing and Abraham did it willingly without hesitation.
Genesis 22
1 And it came to pass after these things that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. 2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. 3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.

When Abraham had only one son it was Ismail.......who was 14 years older than Isaac. Somebody attempted to tamper with the scripture, as has been done so much with the Bible......but they slipped up and the verses are ambiguous.

This depends on tradition. Because I don't honor by choice the Christian Tradition of prayer where I talk to God like a two year old and everything takes care of itself. I don't consider that acceptable for me It's NOT. However I do learn and am inspired by my educational Terminology for principles and Definitions which I would kick under prayer. Although the People I disagree with wouldn't not consider that prayer. Religion is deteriorating and most of us do a better job with our lives by jumping off the train while it's wheels are falling off.

the 2 closest religions on earth are islam and christianity, the quaran and bible teaches the same stuff,...the quran clearly stated, if a muslim does not believe in jesus christ, he is not a true muslim and muslims celeberate all christian holidays, jesus christ name mention in the quran 17 times...

Abraham failed god’s test. He should have said “You’re testing what I learned. Human sacrifice isn’t allowed so to demonstrate I learned what you wanted, I must say no". This would have been far more consistent with his having argued God down to where only ten righteous men were needed to save Sodom. Yet here, he effectively does nothing about his son being killed [by him] other than say "sure Boss".

this holiday reminds me of that hindu holiday where they put a bunch of animals in a field and beat and chop them to death. does anyone know what the name of that is so i can google it?

It's called a barbaric atrocity by any other name.

Allah Says in the Holy Qur'an
2:120 Never will the Jews or the Christians be satisfied with thee unless thou follow their form of religion. Say: "The Guidance of Allah,-that is the (only) Guidance." Wert thou to follow their desires after the knowledge which hath reached thee, then wouldst thou find neither Protector nor helper against Allah.

Some people (he doesn't have to be limited just to Jews and Christians, Atheist too have their own form of religion) they have their own idea of what they think life should be that doesn't conformed to anything of the natural patterns in creation. They are just following their own lust, whims and desires looking for a following to validate claims while propagating their moral defects and weaknesses as being the correct paradigm. They will never be satisfied with those of us who choose to follow a disciplined way of life of high moral refinement and intellectual excellence given to them by G'd. They target those who say they believe in a higher overriding authority in their lives that they obey, called G'd or Allah, they target them for their deformed way of thinking. They are not content to let matters be and live their miserable lives all to themselves. No, they have to make war on the righteous. The guidance of Allah is the only true guidance and they will never be able to get the believers to follow their vain desires for legitimacy.

Allah is the Best of Planners.

Why do modern translations of the Koran mimic the 17th century English of the King James Bible?

The translater of the qur'an that I used to get this quote from was an Egyptian and he was influenced by Shakespere english. There is a need to have a translation done using American English. Efforts are being made and there are other english translations that don't use Shakespere english. I think the translation by Muhammad Ali an Ahmaydiyah is a good english translation. However, I am always more comfortable reading the arabic on the side of these english translations because I find many words that have been translated into the english is not true to the actual Arabic term.

If Allah was such a good planner he'd have gotten his follower's religions right the first time rather than Islam 1.0 aka Judaism and Islam 2.0 aka Christianity.

Islam 3.o is no improvement.

Die to those animal drives in your lower appetites for greed, selfishness, dominance, and arrogance; and come alive to pure human sentiments for humanity in a way that pleases G'd. Die to your lower self and come alive to your higher self.

That's the real meaning in Abraham's sacrifice. Abraham sacrifice means true education and liberation; and it means the sharing of the knowledge to those who were shut out of the knowledge. He sacrificed the sheepish order and that was helpless under the power of the ram and gave them the knowledge so the people wouldn't be sheepish anymore taking the abuses from those who dominated them and manipulated them to do their bidding. All of those animals that we sacrifice on the Hajj represents a different type of knowledge, and they represents something in our human makeup that we must sacrifice.

Meat represents knowledge in scriptural language. So, Allah tells us "Die that we may Live".
01:10 PM on 11/07/2011
Soooo, to sacrifice something unwanted in our human nature, we kill millions of innocent animals. Yeah, that makes perfect sense if you're worshipping a bloodthirsty tribal deity from the Middle East. Not that muslims are the only ones doing that. Hindus do it too and Jews also would if the Temple was rebuilt. Barbaric practices!

Allah tells us in the Qur'an "Die so that you may Live". Death supports Life. Something has to die so that we may have life. Even vegetable life has live nutrients in them. The most important idea in that expression of "die that you may live" is the sign or the message that it speaks to our minds; the messages that it is feeding to our intelligence is more important. Everyone already knows naturally that nature has provided for us things from the earth like animals, vegetation, water, fruits, etc for us to live off of to sustain our life. Also, the animal life itself nature has provided many things from the earth for it to live off of too. Plant life is feeding off of things in the environment that has to die to sustain its life. Man did not need a revelation from G'd to tell us these things. The revelation is communicating something on a much more higher level.

Now all of you who are steep in ugliness, ignorance, bigotry and hate; die to that ugliness, ignorance, bigotry and hatred so you can live the life of a true human that is respectful. Die to your stupidity and come alive to honest intellectual pursuits. Die to that which is narrow and negative, and come alive seeking the broadest and the best meaning in a thing. Die to the evilness and come alive to righteousness and goodness. That's the real Sacrifice.

"Die so that you may Live".

Tell that to our ancestors who worked really, really hard for 200,000 years to make sure we kept our canine teeth.

Canine teeth, yes, those that are designed by nature to chew flesh off a bone.

Deal with it. Nature hates a vaccuum, but loves the smell of frying bacon.

This was good to find... from Pakistan's National Newspaper (Dawn): http://www.dawn.com/2011/11/05/spare-the-cattle.html

"SPARE THE CATTLE"

"I remember my parents bringing home two goats yearly. I became so fond of them, relishing the moments when we took our evening tea in the garden and the goats would roam free and graze.

On the morning of Eid-ul-Azha we said our final goodbyes to the unsuspecting animals, all fattened up and healthy. I shed buckets of tears with sad thoughts about the two precious pets I had lost. Believe it or not, Eid-ul-Azha has a very traumatic and psychologically disturbing affect on the children who are exposed to the sacrificial animals. I hated the holiday as a child, wishing I had never seen the goats. Dinner consisted of all kinds of curries, swimming around sacrificed meat and I could not force a morsel down my throat. No amount of spice could eliminate the images of the poor animals being led to their deaths."

Rest at link... worth reading.
